I run a wilderness leadership program outside of Portland Oregon at George Fox University.  The 7-day backpacking trip for student leaders, soph- seniors.  I want to get some data from our program alumni regarding how the experience has impacted them, not just during their time at Fox but in their lives post graduate as well.  What I'm struggling with is knowing what questions to ask and how to ask them.  What I have id so far is impact on:

1. leadership

2. comfortability/ interest with/ in future wilderness activities

3. wilderness care (LNT)

4. personal growth

Other than that I don't know what else I want to know, you know?  Is there a survey others have developed or an article that could help me get some ideas about what to ask and how to ask it?

The questions you've raised are pretty general. Do you have some other, more specific things you want to ask? For example here are some questions we used a number of years ago for alumni leaders.

1) Did you participate in your Frosh Trip? ____ Yes ____No

2) If yes, was the Frosh Trip a valuable experience and if so, why?

3) Did you lead a Frosh Trip? q No q Yes If so, how many ________.

4) Was leading OA Trips an important experience for you? If so, why?

5) Why does Princeton need the Outdoor Action Program?

6) What has the OA experience meant to you since you left Princeton? How have you continued to use the skills and experience you developed through OA? Has it had a positive impact on your career?

So far I have mostly Likert style questions like:

My Walkabout experience: helped me develop skills as a leader  1 strongly disagree 5 strongly agree

    ...gave opportunity to lead others

... gave me an opportunity to serve others

... helped build lasting relationships with other participants

... since going on Walkabout I have participated in other wilderness adventure activities

... since going on Walkabout I feel more comfortable participating in wilderness activities

What year(s) did you participate

Did you graduate from George Fox University Y/ N

Walkabout was my first over-night backpacking experience Y/N

Prior to my first Walkabout experience, I was most worried about a) the temperature b) going to the bathroom in the woods c) wild animals d) solo e) summiting a Mt f) my group g) other

JD,

It is tough to design these types of surveys because they can not help but be expressions of our assumptions.  I would suggest you a couple different paths.

#1.  Draft a survey and then give it to 10 people to beta test.  Ask them to make comments on the questions, how they interpreted the questions, etc.  I typically do this with my surveys and I have always received great feedback.

#2  Make a more open survey, rather than use a likert scale, which is easy to score, but difficult to write, you could ask more general questions "Did any aspect of Walkabout help you in college?"  This may provide you a lot of different answers that you will then need to code and conceptualize, but may provide better information, especially if your survey is misses something.

If you have time, I would suggest doing #2 and use the information to create a survey.  Beta test it and hopefully you will have great information.

You may want to look at Dr. Brad Daniel's work on Life Significance of a Spiritually Oriented Outward Bound Experience. He did his dissertation at Antioch in New England and the study was retrospective looking at participants from 25 years and asking what stood out now that they recalled their experience.
