    School Program Internship Description

    Description:

    Our Internship position is designed to provide students an opportunity to apply and explore knowledge, skills and attitudes developed during the academic experience. It is also aimed at helping students make a smooth transition from the classroom into full-time employment. The Sheridan School Mountain Campus serves private and public schools from all over the DC/MD/VA area. We serve youth from Kindergarten through high school; generally serving 25-60 students at a time.

    Our programs have heavy emphasis on Environmental Literacy & Place-based Ecology (forest, wetland, karstlands, wildlife etc.), Challenge Course and Personal Development (teambuilding, low/ high ropes course, community living etc.), Outdoor Adventure Education (canoeing, hiking / backpacking, caving, rock climbing, wilderness skills, orienteering etc.), and Social Studies Simulations (Underground Railroad, The Silk Road, Archaeology, Native American life etc.). Other responsibilities are to help create an inclusive and supportive community environment for students, visiting teachers, administrators, parents and other staff, help with non-teaching projects, assist with limited kitchen duties, and participate in trail and grounds maintenance.

    The Site:

    The Sheridan Mountain Campus is situated on 130 acres in the Shenandoah Valley near Luray, VA. Dedicated to environmental education, the school has been offering quality day and residential programs for over 40 years. The school facilities include a modern dining hall, infirmary and nature center. The tent village sleeps up to 60 students and adult chaperones. Students use pit privies and a shower house with six individual stalls. In addition to the Mountain Campus, the some programs also utilize the Shenandoah National Park, George Washington National Forest, and Shenandoah River.

    Qualifications:

    Successful candidates will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Working toward a Bachelor's Degree in environmental studies, education, recreation, outdoor leadership, or a related field. A strong interest in teaching / working with children and/or leading outdoor environmental education programs. Certifications in First Aid and CPR are required by the starting date.

    Benefits:

    $200/week, housing, meals during programs, free laundry, and access to wireless internet.
