  • Anyone know of outdoor programming aimed specifically at supporting/inspiring/bonding sophomore college students?

    Thanks

  • YES! West Virginia University has the SOAR program (Sophomore Outdoor Adventure Reorientation). It focuses on academic leadership of the self and others and long term goals beyond school and well as avoiding the Sophomore slump (when Universities don't offer you catchy freshmen retention programs anymore, and you're not the prized senior class yet either)...

    Check them out here...

p.s. I am the guy two persons right of the boulder on the left. Hat on, chin on fist, taken from my first year with the program, long before my days with North Carolina Outward Bound!

  • Thank you! Precisely what I was looking for. Do you know of others out there on the same scale as SOAR?

  • Hey Ed,

Brown University also focuses on Sophomores in their BOLT program.

Recently folks in the student development field have realized that all
the focus on first-year students has resulted in some neglect or at
least a drop-off in support for sophomores. The National Resource
Center for The First Year Experience and Students in Transition has
focussed on sophomore transition issues and would be a great source of
    information (in a non-wilderness context).

    Here is a link: http://sc.edu/fye/resources/soph/index.html

Let me know if I can be of any more help.

  • Thanks Brent. Saw the BOLT site - very nice premise. Davidson is concerned about exactly the phenomenon you mention. Just have to figure out how to implement something effective given the resources available now.

Hope all is going well up there.
