  • I'm teaching a survey course on environmental and ecological education for students in a B.A. program in adventure education, as well as a handful of students from other majors such as teacher ed and environmental studies.

    Can anyone recommend good texts?

  • NOLS Environmental Education Notebook is concise and filled with good interactive lesson plans.

  • Absolutely. "Earth Education" by Steve van Matre (http://www.eartheducation.org/resource.asp?sku=beea). We used this in my teaching methods class, and it essentially altered my whole outlook on the environment. I give a lot of credit to van Matre's philosophy (as espoused by my professor, of course) as being responsible for my current passion for Earth Care.

Said professor also frequents this board. Maybe he will pop in for an opinion. The book offers a ton of additional resources from the author's organization. There are entire curricula that can be adapted.

The difference between environmental education and Earth education may sound like semantics, but van Matre makes a good case as to why the second title should be our goal.

Man is the end, the mountain is the means; the goal is not merely to reach the summit, but to improve the man.” — Walter Bonatti

  • I'd also look for books by David Sobel like

Beyond Ecophobia-Reclaiming the Heart in Nature Education

  • I find David Orr's books quite provocative, especially Earth in Mind.  Also Richard Loev's book.  both address some of the philosophical ideas in env. ed. which are a good exposure for students.

  • Karen, Orr's Earth in Mind is sitting on my shelf; gift of a friend.  Been thinking about it!

Rick & Brad - thanks for the suggestions!

  • Fun topic! In no particular order, some authors, books and articles that have made me think critically and inspired me around this topic.

I second (or third?) the recommendation for David Orr. I personally consider Leopold timeless and foundational as well. Molly Baker has done some great work integrating environmental, adventure, and place-based pedagogies. Andrew Brookes and his colleagues down under at La Trobe University are always provocative and encourage critical thinking about what we do as outdoor educators, and why we do it. Jame's Raffan's work has been a big influence on my own thinking and presents an intriguing framework one might experiment with in crafting curriculum and pedagogy.

So, a few of my favorites:

  • Derek, thanks that’s a great list. I’ve posted the list in a new Wiki section at http://www.outdoored.com/Community/wikis/outdoored/reading-list-of-sustainability.aspx

If you have other titles to suggest, add it to the Wiki.

  • Excellent!  I've got a few of these readings, but not all, so thanks Derek.

I'll be compiling a reader which these will go into.  Some of Orr's stuff's definitely going into it (from Earth in Mind and Ecological Literacy) as well as some stuff from Orion Magazine.

In addition, I'll be requiring these three texts:

    Beyond Ecophobia
Conservation Education & Outreach (only one I hadn't heard of until recently; looks great)
    Sharing Nature with Children
