Do many people have experience running courses for students/particiapants of Kosher needs? NOLS did one back in 2004, but I wanted to see how many other people have experience with those particular special needs. Brian, we don’t run trips only for Jewish students but we have a number of trips that go out all kosher. The person that I know who has done the most work with this is Liz Cutler a friend from Princeton. She organized the summer wilderness trip section of a Jewish Camp called the Olin Sang Ruby Institute. They ran multi-week programs for Jewish youth that included a Rabbi and daily religious instruction. I can get you her contact info if you want to talk with her

Good point Sylvia, as far as being culturally appropriate I think it would be better to rename the Web page so it is not Kosher.shtml. That shows a lack of sophistication on NOLS' part.

"The KWLE course will be run in accordance with the Jewish calendar and observance of Jewish laws. Jon Kimchi, a NOLS graduate of a 2004 kosher course, will serve as the primary religious leader for the program, informing NOLS administration and instructors of necessary actions to respect Kashrut and Shabbat.
NOLS will ensure that an hour is set aside each morning for T’fillah. The end of the day will also be structured to incorporate time for Mincha and Maariv, as well as daily interactive sessions focusing on the relationship between nature, Judaism & the environment prepared especially for this program. A layover day will be scheduled on July 9 for 17th day of Tammuz fast."

The word Kosher refers to dietary practices, which are only a part of the observances of many Jews who keep kosher. Other needs, such as the observance of the Sabbath, should also be a part of the plan for the trip. It might be more appropriate to characterize this trip as one for Observant or Traditional Jews. My brother and I are NOLs alumni (adventure expedition 1971, before we became more orthodox). He had a son on the kosher trip to alaska (I guess in 2003 or 4) and a daughter in the wyoming trip the following year when you were partnering with TEVA. Now I have a 14 year old son. I would love to give him the NOLs experience. When I asked the alumni office if there was going to be a kosher trip this year no one responded to my request. It's probably too late for my son for this year, but can someone keep me posted for upcoming trips in the next few years?
