The Houston Independent School District's Outdoor Education Center at Forest Glen is a residential school program designed to provide urban 5th grade students a positive experience in the outdoors. The facility is located 85 miles north of Houston on 260 acres of East Texas piney woods forest bordering the Sam Houston National Forest.The curriculum is an extension of the classroom and is designed to address environmental concerns, human relationships, and responsible stewardship of the earth. While attending the center, students are involved in a multitude of experiential lessons involving math, science, language arts, social studies and physical education. Some of these include teambuilding and intiative activities, structured journal writing, aquatic studies, conservation, sensory activities, leadership, Native American studies, canoeing, archery, living history at a pioneer homestead and chuckwagon, gardening, horseback riding, geology, and night experiences.
Job responsibilities include the direct supervision of and for the safety of students during the 4 day, 3 night experience. ACL's also assist with the planning and development of activities, provide curriculum instruction, develop and maintain instructional materials and promote positive multi-ethnic interactions with in the cabin and instructional groups.
Quallifications: college experience, college degree preferred, residential outdoor experience, previous teaching in an outdoor setting, naturalist/interpretive work, and/or supervision of children in a natural setting
