  10. Program Description: Pali Institute is a large, fast-paced and growing outdoor education program located in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. Our program works with school-aged students from California, Arizona and Nevada every week throughout the school year.  We teach students in an outdoor setting about the wonders of science, environmental ethics, teambuilding/leadership skills and more. We hire enthusiastic, outdoor-minded instructors ready to live and work in the woods.

Job Description: Pali Institute is seeking dedicated, enthusiastic educators with a strong work ethic and who are willing to work long hours to join our outdoor education family.  We are a rigorous, fast-paced and fun program that constantly strives to develop exciting outdoor curriculum for students in grades 4-12th.  Pali Instructors teach different students every week in a variety of classes within the disciplines of science, outdoor education and leadership training courses.  Pali strives to be an excellent educational supplement to classroom-based education and is proud to meet many California, Nevada & Arizona State Standards with our science curriculum.  We discuss a broad array of topics from geology and engineering, forest ecology and outdoor cooking. With California’s seismic history in mind, we test the strength of student's engineered bridges.  We look for macro- and micro-invertebrates as we teach freshwater biology at our pond.  Students also learn about aerodynamic principles as they build and launch rockets around property.  We utilize an ever-growing low ropes course, three high ropes courses and our Quad-Zip Lines to foster and encourage personal and social growth in our students. When the sun goes down, warm up by the campfire as you and the kids perform skits, teach the students about crepuscular animals and the use of their senses on a night hike, or turn up the music as the students perform karaoke. Do you like to look at the night sky? You will have the opportunity to gaze into the night as you teach about stars, planets and the galaxy using our telescopes. By the end of the week, you will look back at the rewards of working with children and teaching in the outdoors. Most weeks our instructors teach an activity group during the day and take on the role of cabin instructor with cabin responsibilities at night.

  11. Pali is a Residential School Program.  This is a full-time seasonal position with hours scheduled according to group attendance and additional duties assigned by the Director.  Our Winter/Spring calendar is sold out, so work will be available.  You can expect to be in cabin no more than 75% of your time.  You will also be expected to effectively teach in all three discipline areas.  We provide regular feedback on teaching and performance.  Once you are familiar with the basics of the program, other responsibilities such as School Lead, Green Team (composting, recycling & greenhouse), and the Nature Center (reptiles & amphibians) are available.

At Pali, we believe in continued growth opportunities for our instructor staff.  The longer instructors stay at Pali, they will be given more responsibilities, opportunities to contribute to program improvement, and a chance to create workshops for their peers.

  12. Qualifications:
Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Science, Environmental Studies or related field.  Extensive experience in the camping and/or experiential education fields.  Be comfortable & confident supervising/teaching students in large and small groups.  Must be able to have fun with kids, laugh at yourself and be silly!  Must have a good sense of humor!  Must have the ability to be flexible and adjust to changes quickly.  Must have positive attitude and the ability to work in a team environment with 45 other staff!  Handle concerns/issues in a constructive manner.  Must be able to receive constructive feedback and apply the information in the timely manner.  The ability to use creative teaching techniques and group management skills.  The ability to learn and execute the lessons/activities in an expansive curriculum.  Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Must pass a federal and state background check.  First Aid/CPR certification.
  13. Salary: $75/day in cabin. $55/day out of cabin.  Master's or teaching certificate considered for extra pay.  Occasional weekends are required when school groups have been booked.  Additional weekend work available through Conference center for extra pay.   Benefits: 50% of medical paid after 90 days, Pro-Deals on outdoor gear, living and playing in Southern California.    Housing: Instructors provided generous off-site housing for weekends and out of cabin use.
