    SUMMARY: The Outdoor Leadership and Intramural Sports Specialist is a member of the Division of Student Affairs and is responsible for providing leadership to the office of Campus Recreation at Auraria, a comprehensive recreation, fitness and wellness program. This position will coordinate activities and services for students, faculty, staff and alumni of the Metropolitan State University of Denver, Community College of Denver, and University of Colorado Denver. This position is responsible for coordinating activities within the Outdoor Adventure Center: will organize and deliver face to face small-group facilitation activities, work closely with other staff to plan and deliver leadership programs, will plan, organize and lead new student wilderness orientations for the Auraria Campus. In addition the position will oversee the daily operations of the intramural sports programs including coordinating basketball, racquet ball, volleyball and other competitive individual and league sports activities. This position requires practical applications of outdoor leadership skill including a combination of rock climbing, hiking, camping, orienteering, winter camping, kayaking, and avalanche forecasting and canoeing. Experience coordinating recreation or athletic sports competitions is preferred.

  11. QUALIFICATIONS:
    Required Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in recreation or outdoor recreation, sports management, exercise physiology, health education, physical education, business administration, communications or related field. Four years' experience leading wilderness/backcountry experiences in a higher education setting as a student guide or program administrator, coordinator, assistant director, etc. Two years' experience (full time or part time, accounting for not less than 20 separate actives) planning and leading teambuilding facilitation activities. Knowledge of curriculum necessary for training staff to lead backcountry trips in support of student success. Four years' experience with the development, supervision, management, training, implementation and conducting of a minimum of three indoor and/or outdoor recreational activities including rock climbing, ice climbing, kayaking, canoeing, sea kayaking, backpacking, skiing, avalanche forecasting, hiking, high-angle rescue or other. Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR and Wilderness First Responder certification, or the ability to obtain these certifications within the first three (3) months of employment.. Current Driver's license, or the ability to obtain a license, and excellent driving record.

     

    Preferred Qualifications:
    American Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor certification. Knowledge and experience organizing sports leagues. Experience refereeing and/or supervising referees in one or more of the following organized sports leagues including high school, community recreation leagues and/or college intramural sports. Experience working with people with disabilities. American Avalanche Institute (or equivalent) Level II or Professional Avalanche Worker Certification. AMGA Single Pitch Instructor course completion and/or certification. American Canoeing Association Instructor course completion and/or certification.
