    ABOUT VENTURE
    Venture is an experientially based outdoor education program modeled after Outward Bound. The department provides weekend wilderness trips, academic courses in outdoor adventure activities, and structured team building and leadership development programs for students, faculty, staff and community. The purpose of Venture is to help individuals form deeper connections with themselves, others, and the natural environment through meaningful and challenging activity-based involvement that promotes personal development.  The goal of Venture is to provide the nation’s best outdoor experiential program, based in an urban research university.
  11. RESPONSIBILITIES
    The Venture Director serves as the general director, manager, instructor and administrator with primary responsibility for the following:

    •    Senior level management and administration of the outdoor experiential learning program including directing and managing programs, field and classroom instruction, personnel management, budget and financial control, information systems, services, and risk management.
    •    Course development and instruction as a half-time faculty member of the Department of Kinesiology, contributing to faculty governance and coordinating academics for a half-time teaching load in Outdoor Education.  
    •    Supervision and professional development of staff including selection and training; development and coordination of student leadership opportunities; and classroom and field instruction in self-propelled outdoor adventure pursuits.  
    •    Implementation of risk management plans and exercise safety standards; equipment management including, but not limited to, outdoor equipment, vehicle operation and maintenance, challenge courses and climbing wall; administration of insurance, permits, safety reviews and accreditation; and associated budget and financial management.
  12. QUALIFICATIONS
    Successful candidate will possess the following:  

    •    A Master’s Degree in Education, Recreation, Natural Sciences, Student Personnel and Guidance or related field;
    •    A minimum of five years, seven or more years preferred, of experience in the profession with an appropriate balance of program development, field and classroom instruction, supervisory skills and administrative experience;
    •    Wilderness First Responder Certification;
    •    High level facilitation skills for low and high challenge courses and initiative exercises;
    •    Ability to serve as a senior instructor in at least four of the following areas:  Whitewater Kayaking, Class III; Whitewater Canoeing, Class II; Sea Kayaking and Coastal Kayaking; River and Lake Canoe Tripping; Nordic Skiing; Rock Climbing; Backpacking and Leave No Trace Camp Craft; and Orienteering;
    •    Demonstrated proficiency in at least two of the following: audio/visual presentations; the natural sciences; ropes course construction skills; risk management administration; first aid instruction; mountain search and rescue; personnel management; and budgeting and account management.
  13. Salary Range:  $55,000 - $65,000
