Program and Position Overview: MCC is dedicated to accomplishing outdoor recreation and conservation projects for the public, promoting and managing volunteer opportunities, providing conservation education, building self-esteem and leadership, and raising the aspirations of members and volunteers.  Environmental Stewards begin their term of service with 3 weeks of training and orientation.  After training, Environmental Stewards are placed individually with Maine federal, state or non-profit organizations to recruit and train community volunteers and accomplish conservation projects.

    Location:  The MCC office is located in Hallowell, Maine.  Training typically takes place in the Hallowell area.  Post training, Environmental Stewards are placed at service sites throughout Maine

    Time Commitment

    •        April 29 - October 26, 2013

    •        26 weeks; 40 hours per week

    •        Monday-Friday with overnights during training; some weekends and overnights maybe required after training, depending on placement and host site schedules

  11. Key Responsibilities:

    •        Create new trails and rehabilitate existing trails

    •        Implement existing land management plans

    •        Recruit, train and lead volunteers to create and improve recreational trail systems

    •        Establish a sustainable, dedicated community volunteer base

    •        Develop plans and fundraise for conservation projects

    •        Complete all paperwork in a thorough and timely manner, including submission of timesheets and other forms required by the MCC.

    •        Represent the MCC and the host site organization in a professional and supportive manner.

    •        Adhere to the MCC drug free workplace policy.

    •        Other duties as assigned, not to include AmeriCorps prohibited activities

    Typical Training Topics:

    Maine Driving Dynamics - First Aid & CPR Certification - Chainsaw Safety - GPS Data Collection - Griphoist and Rigging Operations - Conflict Resolution, Diversity, and Communication - Principles of Leadership - Working with Volunteers - Leave No Trace - Trail Tools and Safety

  12. Qualifications

    •        High School diploma or equivalent

    •        Must be at least 18 years old

    •        Must be a US Citizen

    •        Must pass criminal and sex offender background checks

    •        Eligibility for AmeriCorps and ability to complete term of service

    Essential Functions

    •        Have the ability to live and perform strenuous work under challenging conditions

    •        Have the desire to learn, serve others, and make a difference

    •        Good communication skills

    •        Excellent work ethic

    •        Interest in personal growth and in participating in on-going training

    •        Previous trail construction,  planning and fundraising experience

    •        Experience with volunteer management practices

    Desired Functions:

    •        Responsible and reliable

    •        Follows directions

    •        Possesses motivation and initiative
