This is a high-level management position with overall responsibility for the outdoor programming functions of the WREC and requires a significant degree of initiative, independence, critical thinking and problem solving skill.  This position has overall responsibility for operations of outdoor programs including Adventure Outings, Chico Bound Program, rental warehouse, WREC climbing gym, yurt rental program, and vehicle fleet management.

    EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

    Knowledge of:

    • Principles, practices, and procedures of varied indoor and outdoor recreational activities and programs.
    • Cultural, social, recreational, educational, and service objectives and needs of a university community.
    • Risk management practices and procedures.
    • Contract development and administration.
    • Budget development, fiscal controls, and accounting.
    • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
    • Computer systems and software applications related to administration of outdoor recreation activities

    Ability to:

    • Plan, develop, and implement a diverse Adventure Outings program for the Associated Students.
    • Recruit, supervise, train, and evaluate staff for all program activities and functions.
    • Prepare and monitor budgets.
    • Analyze Adventure Outings programs, developing methods to achieve goals.
    • Ensure that programs and events meet the needs of the campus community.
    • Organize data, maintain records and prepare reports.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community, general public, co-workers, and those contacted during the course of work.
    • The incumbent shall work well under pressure: meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines.
    • The incumbent shall at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors. 

  11. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Develops, implements, and coordinates WREC outdoor programs including Adventure Outings, Chico Bound Program, rental warehouse, WREC climbing gym, yurt rental program, and vehicle fleet management
    • Develops and evaluates program goals and objectives
    • Develops program calendar of events
    • Recruits, hires, supervises, trains, evaluates, and directs program staff
    • Develops, monitors and administers budgets for each activity and overall outdoor program
    • Establishes policies and procedures
    • Maintains accurate records and provides participation and financial reports
    • Ensures all programs are consistent with student feedback and conducted in accordance with industry and governing body standards
    • Ensures program access to all students regardless of ability level
    • Develops, implements, and monitors publicity
    • Meets regularly with the Wildcat Recreation Center Director to discuss program goals and effectiveness
    • Purchases and maintains wide variety of equipment
    • Evaluates activities and recommends appropriate changes
    • Leads activities as required
    • Coordinates risk management efforts including training, policy development and implementation including annual evaluation of programs
    • Coordinates with a variety of federal, state and local regulatory agencies
    • Represents WREC Outdoor Programs with Bell Memorial Union Committee (BMUC), the campus community, the public, and other organizations.
  12. Experience:

    Five (5) years of experience required in the development, supervision/management, training, implementation, and conduct of indoor and outdoor recreational activities including skiing, cross country skiing, mountaineering, rock climbing, white water rafting and kayaking, biking, canoeing, sea kayaking, caving, backpacking, sailing, etc.

    In addition, specific experience in coordinating and programming outdoor recreation for a campus population; familiarity with challenge course/climbing wall administration; and an understanding of student union operations, philosophies and goals is preferred.

    Education:

    Completion of college level educational training in subjects related to student development, outdoor recreation, and administration is highly desirable. Prefer broad experience with other outdoor programs such as WEA, NOLS or Outward Bound.

    Special Requirements:

    • Possession of or ability to obtain a current and valid California Commercial Driver's license (Class B) with an acceptable driving record. 
    • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (WFR/ WEMT preferred).
  13. The Adventure Outings Coordinator is a full-time, full-year position and the compensation range is $4,180 - $6,270 per month (includes 7% PAC funding for benefits). Placement in range is dependent on experience. New employees are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range.

    Benefits include PERS retirement, life and disability insurance, vacation, sick leave, and holidays. Pick and Choose (PAC) plan includes employer contributions to a flex plan (i.e., a Section 125 cafeteria plan) of an additional $160 per month plus 7% of annual base pay from which elections may be made for health, dental, and vision insurance, medical and dependent care reimbursement accounts, supplemental insurance, or cash out.
