Bond Park Community Center is seeking energetic, creative, and top-quality individuals at least 18 years of age who are enthusiastic about working with elementary-aged children or teens to serve as Summer Day and Teen Adventure Camp Staff or Summer Camp Activity Specialists.  Candidates must be available to work an average of 30-40 hours per week, with a flexible schedule, Monday through Friday. 

General responsibilities will be to effectively plan, organize, and instruct recreational and educational activities for year-round youth day camps. Specific details for each of the position areas are included in “Typical Tasks” below.

Employment starts June and runs through August. Additional employment possible beyond August. Applicants selected as Camp Staff must participate in general staff training before camps begin. Applicants selected as Activity Specialists must participate in specialist-based training and all general staff trainings before camps begins.

SALARY:
Camp Staff: $8.75-$12.00 Hourly
Activity Specialists: $9.75-$14.00 Hourly

Camp Dates:
Bond Park Teen Adventure Camp: June 15 – August 14 (no camp July 2nd & 3rd)
 

Typical Tasks

 Teen Adventure Camp Staff

  • Instructs camp activities
  • Sets up and takes down equipment
  • Carries out behavior management procedures and handles camper emergencies
  • Assists with camper drop-off and pick-up 

Summer Camp Activity Specialists

  • Researches, plans and instructs camp activities
  • Sets up and takes down equipment
  • Carries out behavior management procedures and handles camper emergencies
  • Assists with camp opening and closing
  • Assists with camper drop-off and pick-up

Sports & Recreation Specialist

  • Develop age-appropriate activities to keep children active and help them develop skills, teamwork and sportsmanship
  • Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities

Some sports and recreation specialists concentrate in specific activities such as soccer, basketball, or tennis. Others will lead a variety of activities such as Ultimate Frisbee and flag football.
 
Outdoor Recreation Specialist

  • Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities
  • Facilitate activities that give children a sense of accomplishment which comes from mastering techniques and skills

Some outdoor recreation specialists concentrate in activities such as archery, canoeing, orienteering and nature studies.
 
Visual and Performing Arts Specialists 

  • Plan activities that give children the opportunity to express themselves creatively
  • Facilitate activities that give children a sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering techniques and completing projects
  • Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities

Programs include drama, dance, arts and crafts, music, and more. 
 
Enrichment Specialists

  • Plan activities that give the children the opportunity to participate in activities that are both recreational and educational
  • Facilitate activities that give children a sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering techniques and projects
  • Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities. Enrichment activities consist of science, martial arts, and more.

Performs other job-related tasks as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to acquire knowledge of Town of Cary policies, procedures, and services of the department; good organizational and time management skills; knowledge of principles and techniques instructions and leadership of recreation activities, program content of youth programs, and supervisory techniques; general knowledge of traditional camps; general knowledge of equipment and supplies required for camp operation; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with general public and with other staff; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to exercise judgment in controlling the activities, behavior, and safety of camp attendees.
 

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

General Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old and have a proven ability to interact with children or teens.
  • Activity Specialists must have a combination of education and experience that is equal to two or more years of college leading to a bachelor’s degree with major course work in recreation, physical education, elementary/middle/high school education, drama/art or closely related field.
  • Some positions will require driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Prefer CPR and First-aid Certification, and previous experience in a summer camp setting leading activities and/or other activities.

 
Specific Requirements

  • Sports, Outdoor & Recreation Specialists: Requires experience in organizing relevant activities or sports in the area of specialty
  • Visual and Performing Arts, Enrichment Specialists: Requires prior teaching experience and/or expertise in the area of specialty

 
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
