Adventure Trip Leader

Job Description


  • To lead groups of ten teenagers through New England and into Canada on activity specific week long trips, while following an itinerary and budget, and using their own skills and utilizing professional outfitters. Trip leaders are responsible for the physical and mental safety and wellbeing of themselves, their co-workers and the participants.  Trip leaders set the positive example to project a positive image of YMCA Camp Lincoln.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Training and experience with adventure/ropes course programs and rock climbing experience preferred
  • CPR and First Aid 
  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification or Willing to Obtain
  • Lifeguard Certified or Willing to Obtain
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults outdoors
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Ability to relate to one’s peer group
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, creativity, and self-control
  • Good character, judgment, integrity, adaptability and ability to incorporate YMCA’s character traits (Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Caring) in to daily living
  • Ability to drive a fifteen passenger van or mini-bus, at least 21 years old and a clean driving record

Responsible to:

Assistant Director


  1. Summer Adventure Trips
    1. Finalize trip itineraries including making reservations, planning meals, securing food and appropriate equipment, and planning travel routes.
    2. Lead week long Adventure Trips with co-leader and a maximum of ten youth (11-15 years old).
    3. Complete debrief and evaluations with participants and Outdoor Adventure Director to ensure quality programs and provide suggestions for future trips.
    4. Successfully model the YMCA’s four character traits in everyday life and project a positive image of YMCA Camp Lincoln on and off site.
    5. While off site, communicate with Outdoor Adventure Director on pre-determined schedule.
  2. Perform various duties as needed-
    1. During “Off Trip Weeks,” finalize logistics and fill in Summer Day camp as assigned by Program Director.
    2. Incorporate the four core values of the YMCA, pertaining to character development, into the daily programs.  These values are caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  3. These are not the only duties to be performed.  Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

  • Bi-weekly compensation of $1000.00

  • Complete at least the ten week summer camp session as an Adventure Trip Leader.  During this time, lead by positive example, embrace the YMCA’s four core values, respect, responsibility, honesty, and caring, -and incorporate them into the programming, be a positive representative of YMCA Camp Lincoln, receive only positive feedback from participants and parents.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to communicate and train staff and participants in safety regulations and emergency procedures
  • Visual, physical, and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups (age and skill levels), and provide necessary instruction to staff and participants
  • Physical strength to spot and belay participants
  • Physical and cognitive ability to respond appropriately to rescue situations and situations requiring first aid
  • Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct the activity toward achieving the groups’ goals
