Assistant Camp Director

Job Description

Position Summary

Assists in the direction and supervision of all camp programs and staff. Responsible for direct oversight of camp in the absence of the Camp Director. Schedules, monitors, and supports the general counselors throughout the week. Facilitates programs as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise camp staff to ensure programs are creative, fun, and safe
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of pre-camp training
  • Plan and lead staff meetings
  • Review and approve daily programs and evening activities
  • Develop routines, staff schedules, and procedures for camp operation
  • Responsible for the oversight and scheduling of general counselors
  • Maintains a visible presence on camp ensuring the general counselors are present at assigned locations and are on time for all events
  • Ensure safety of all campers and staff
  • Maintain all records of the resident camp programs
  • Assist in the assignment of staff and campers to units or groups
  • Ensure staff are abiding by code of conduct, rules, and expectations
  • Ensure staff are modeling the mission of Girl Scouting
  • Provide an atmosphere conducive to developing good morale and well-being among the camp family
  • Conduct weekly meetings to outline goals and expectations
  • Conduct daily meetings with Unit Leaders to maintain open communication with the units
  • Reviews evaluations with all staff under ACA guidelines in a timely manner
  • Counsel staff on an as needed basis
  • Coordinate daily announcements and special recognitions
  • Collect and disperse mail on a daily basis
  • Conduct cabin inspections at random to ensure units are tidy and maintained throughout the day
  • Support the check-in and check-out process
  • Assist in covering ratio in units when necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills & Qualifications

  • Working towards a bachelor degree in Camp Administration, related degree, or equivalent experience
  • Must have previous experience working in a camp setting
  • Must hold current CPR/First Aid certifications or be able to pass the training at camp
  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Ability to live and work in the outdoors in conditions including but not limited to loud noises, heat, rain and cool temperatures.
  • Ability to walk a mile over uneven terrain
  • Ability to comfortably interact with the public
  • Ability to supervise staff and campers
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision
  • Attend and complete pre-camp training; as a result: ability to communicate and train staff in camp program and procedures, safety regulations, and emergency procedures
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the program and/or site
  • Must be a team player
  • Ability to communicate and work with people of all ages and skill levels
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record, or ability to obtain international driver’s license
  • Ability to work weekends throughout the camp season
  • Fill in as a counselor when needed
  • Follow uniform standards and policies
  • Must pass required background check
