Job Description

We are seeking an Outdoor and Environmental Education (OEE) Assistant Program Director for a highly successful OEE Program.   The candidate filling this new position will work closely with the OEE program directors to provide supervision, leadership and instruction for the OEE program.  We provide a high quality experience to participants focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

College degree or 3 years experience in related field desired.  Classes offered to students include: marine science, squid dissection, stream table, reptiles, group initiatives, forest ecology, wildlife ecology, sustainability, canoeing, orienteering, zip line, climbing wall, archery, and more. Duties include teaching classes and implementing evening programs, hosting meals and some weekend responsibilities. First Aid, CPR required. Life-guarding, waterfront, certifications as well as experience with the BEETLES project preferred, but not necessary.  Paid training will be provided in all aspects of the curriculum, program activities and emergency response.

Would you like to change lives by providing an amazing experience for campers? At Camp Seymour, you get to teach kids self-reliance, a love for nature and the outdoors, and the development of attitudes and practices that build character and leadership. We are looking for an Assistant Director who will work closely with the Outdoor Environmental Educator Program Directors to provide mentorship, leadership and instruction for the OEE program. If hired for this position, you will live and work at Camp Seymour, help supervise and mentor program staff, resident camp staff, and campers. You will actively supervise and maintain safe, enjoyable, age-appropriate programs and events while working with leadership staff to organize and implement the overall camp program. Key Responsibilities: Help create a safe and educational environment that fosters curiosity and appreciation for the natural world. Conduct and assist with off-site programs, including slide shows for schools, cabin leader trainings, and marketing opportunities such as staffing a booth at a fair, as needed. Support adventure and group programs, as needed. Assist OEE Directors with curriculum enhancement and development. Assist in supervising the OEE team of Naturalists. Minimum Requirements   Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in environmental studies, natural resource management, or the natural sciences (preferred).  A minimum of two years’ experience in the field of outdoor and environmental education, and demonstrated ability to work with members and staff of all ages. Basic understanding of the YMCA, its mission, goals and objectives and how these are essential to the operation of YMCA Camp Seymour. Positive attitude and previous experience with school aged children and diverse populations. Knowledge of ecological concepts and camp activities. Current CPR for the Professional, AED First Aid and Oxygen certifications.  Lifeguard certification preferred.
