Camp Tall Oaks

Overview: Camp Tall Oaks is your go to summer day camp for campers interested in exploring the outdoors! Camp Tall Oaks combines outdoor leadership, environmental education and outdoor recreation activities to foster camper relationships with themselves, each other and nature. Each week has a different theme to highlight different activities!

Location: Campers meet their staff each week at Wright Middle School (1717 Fish Hatchery Rd, Madison, WI 53713) and take a bus to the Madison School Forest Campground, a beautiful 300 plus acre property that camp calls home for the summer! Bus begins loading at 7:30 am and departs at 8:00 am. Camper pick-up begins at Wright Middle School at 5:15 pm. Most weeks campers also take field trips to local state parks and/or adventure businesses.

Estimated end date: 8/27/19 (can be flexible)

Salary: $12/hr

Hours of work: 7:30 am-5:30 pm (could vary slightly), M-F with one day off during the week.

Total hours of work per week: 40 hours per week plus more on overnight weeks (4x/summer)

Primary Functions: Program leaders are responsible for planning, leading, and supervising outdoor adventure activities for 4th -6th grade campers. Camp Tall Oaks gives campers a life changing experience through adventure, community and exploring natural areas. Program Leaders facilitate the camper experience and enjoyment of activities such as climbing, canoeing, hiking, swimming, camp songs, overnight camping, games, crafts, camp fires, environmental education and stewardship.

Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Program Leaders should have previous experience with elementary-middle school children.

  • Must have knowledge in outdoor recreation activities such as biking, hiking, small water craft (canoeing and kayaking), outdoor education, and Leave No Trace ethics and/or a willingness to learn and participate

  • Positive attitude and creative thinking skills

  • Ability to generate excitement, concern and respect for the outdoors in multiple settings with youth

Minimum qualifications:

  • Ability to keep campers safe by upholding high behavioral expectations.

  • First Aid/CPR Certified or willing to get certified

  • Willingness and desire to work outdoors for up to 10 hours in all weather conditions with children

  • Training and experience in teaching outdoor skills to children

  • Willingness to sleep outside in a tent and supervise campers overnight

  • Skills in outdoor program design particular to tripping and camping activities.

  • Training and experience in waterfront activities

  • Comfortable leading youth in grades 4th - 6th in varied outdoor activities

  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with the staff team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Lifeguard Certified or willing to be certified

  • Previous resident/day camp staff experience

  • Experience creating and participating in camp culture and community

  • Ability to engage campers throughout the entire day of camp and create a safe and fun environment for campers to thrive.  

Other information: Applicants must be available to attend training during the week of June 10-14
