Summary

The Challenge Course Site Supervisor reports to the Associate Program Director of Safety and Course Delivery and is responsible for supervising and managing the historic Rocky Mountain Program challenge course at our Leadville base camp. This position requires someone who is well versed in ACCT standards for challenge course operations and documentation. A successful candidate is not only a strong challenge course practitioner, but also a skilled facilitator and trainer of staff whom he/she will oversee in ongoing challenge course operations. 

 

 

Responsibilities and Duties

 

 

 

 

  • Run day to day operations of our challenge course (high and low ropes)
  • Lead program creation; oversee and implement challenge course best practices
  • Responsible for delivery of Outward Bound educational outcomes through a facilitated challenge course experience
  • Supervise staff and ensure overall site safety
  • Instruct participants in the skills necessary for a fun and secure experience; including individual and group emotional and physical safety, care and use of equipment, emergency procedures, etc.
  • Mentor staff in the skills necessary for a fun and secure experience, including management physical and emotional safety, care and use of equipment, emergency procedures
  • Assist in supervision of all activities connected with the challenge course to ensure safety of participants, including but not limited to, risk management, effective instruction in course protocols and course elements, use of good judgment when making independent decisions and teaching participants the proper use of equipment
  • Take the lead in technical, non-standard rescues, such as those involving a lower or z-drag.
  • Ability to work as a team with Program Managers, Course Directors and Instructors in planning, implementation and evaluation of participants’ challenge course experience
  • Report, document and file course inspections, incidents, near misses, etc.
  • Responsible for care and use of challenge course gear, hardware, and other equipment and supplies; placing requisitions for necessary equipment and supplies; requesting necessary repair or maintenance work
  • Perform and document regular course inspections 
  • Participate in staff training, meetings, activities and events
  • Perform pre and post use inspection of the site, course and equipment monitor site, course and equipment during use.
  • Responsible for opening and closing procedures during operations
  • Document equipment usage reporting any issues to the APD of Safety and Course Delivery
  • Follows and adheres to national and charter policies and procedures
  • Operate accordingly to ACCT standards and local operational procedures
  • Additional duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Operating in comfort at heights of over 40 feet
  • Current Wilderness First Aid certification
  • Strong verbal communication skills for conveying safety information to participants and staff
  • 1-2 years of previous challenge course experience
  • ACCT Level 2 or equivalent required
  • ACCT Trainer for Level 1 or equivalent – preferred 
  • 21+ years of age
  • Able to confidently present to groups of 10-50
  • 1-2 years of experience working with youth, ideally in an outdoor education setting

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 50+ Ibs
  • Work at computer up to 5-10% of the time
  • Moderate endurance including prolonged standing and sitting, some bending, stooping, climbing, and stretching.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment and activities.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate challenge course activities.
  • Must be able to work outdoors, in inclement weather.

Location and Schedule

  • Works at the Leadville basecamp
  • May be required to work weekends and/or holidays.
  • General schedule is 5 out of 7 days, 40 hours a week.
  • Seasonal Position- May thru August

 

Compensation and Benefits

  • Compensation is $75-100 per day
  • Eligible for Prodeal
  • Room and Board included
