Environmental Education Summer Program Coordinator

Job Description

Christodora, a 122 year-old non-profit organization, announces an exciting opportunity for a vibrant leader in environmental education to join our team at the Manice Education Center (MEC), located in a pristine outdoor setting in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts.   MEC reaches NYC youth by focusing on environmental education, leadership training, and wilderness 1-3 week summer camping programs.

Engaging as a key team member, the Environmental Education Summer Program Coordinator brings a high level of positive energy to help outdoor educators deliver lessons and activities designed for middle school and high school youth to be curious about and inspired by our natural world.  Responsibilities include assisting camp leadership with staff trainings and empowering and supporting 12-15 outdoor educators to deliver effective hands-on activities in environmental education, leadership, and wilderness exploration. The program coordinator creates and organizes various program schedules, helps to write and implement educational activities, as well as plans for Center wide activities and events.  Other duties include leading and assisting in day to day care of gardens, preparing supply requisitions, and occasionally transporting program participants and staff in Center vehicles.     

We are seeking candidates who:

  • Have high energy with positive and effective communication skills.  
  • Are passionate about positively impacting youth and can easily build rapport with a broad and diverse population from low-income neighborhoods in New York City.  
  • Are able to easily spark an interest in the natural sciences and possess experience teaching environmental education lessons/activities in informal or formal settings to middle school and high school aged youth.
  • Are highly organized and have demonstrated success in coordinating schedules and activities. 

Position Availability: 

Wilderness First Aid Training (free to hired candidate): June 8 & 9

Summer Training: June 10-25

Summer Programs: June 27 to August 25

Start date can be flexible.  Schedule during summer can be flexible. 

Requirements:  

  • Excellent motivational, organizational, and communication skills; BA/BS in a related discipline preferred but partial degree attainment and experience will be considered.
  • Ability to attain wilderness first aid and CPR in Center led trainings. 
  • Preferred but not required: Current Driver’s License.  If candidate will be able to help drive participants to local destination than a Safe Driving Record is required.
  • Background clearances and medical physical. 

The Manice Education Center is a residential program and could provide on-site, rustic, housing accommodations for the summer.  However, local candidates are welcome to commute to the  Center for this position.  

Salary/Benefits:  Competitive weekly salary D.O.E.; meals during program operations.  On-site rustic lodging as needed.
