Field and Operations Intern

Job Description

JOB OBJECTIVE: The intern must possess a strong desire to work for a grassroots non-profit and learn about its operational systems and educational goals. This position is designed to facilitate the development of technical, interpersonal, and educational skills within the context of the Montana Wilderness School core curriculum and risk management philosophy. 

The intern will report directly to the Operations Manager for all in town work duties and to the Wilderness Program Manager while working with instructors in the field. The intern will be part of a small team of interns and receive ongoing assistance and guidance from supervisors. 

The Intern will support the MWS operations: food and equipment systems (to include purchasing, packing, and inventory),  course launches and landings, and course transportation. 

The intern will receive comprehensive staff training. They will have the opportunity to participate in  21-25 total field days as part of an instructor team, during which the intern will learn how to lead inexperienced 14 through 18-year-old students on backpacking and/or paddling expeditions. The intern will assist in the facilitation of lessons and activities to achieve both MWS curricular and programmatic goals. The intern will focus on teaching foundational skills relevant to backpacking courses. Depending on interest and experience, the intern may be assigned to develop either paddling or mountaineering skills and receive mentorship in either of these categories.
