Field Director - Young Adult Wilderness Therapy

Elements Traverse is a therapeutic outdoor adventure program for young adults located in central Utah. The Field Director is responsible for executing the vision and mission of Elements Traverse through the field program. The Field Director directs and oversees all field operations, including hiring, training, supervising, and retaining field staff, risk management, program curriculum, and incident reporting. The Field Director works closely with Leadership, Clinical, Adventure Programming, Medical, and Logistics to effectively execute the field program.

Staff Supervision

  • oversees the leadership and development system of the field staff
  • manages recruiting and hiring process for field staff
  • oversees the curriculum for initial field staff training
  • oversees productive and relevant weekly field staff trainings
  • maintains the field staff schedule and time off requests
  • trains field staff on Aegis skills, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and 7 Challenges
  • occasionally, the Field Director will fill in for field staff in a group, with a walker, or on a quest

Program Supervision

  • keeps the big picture of the program in mind, and ensures that all aspects of the program are being upheld and taught
  • visits the field on a regular basis (at least 2x a month for day and/or overnight visits) to provide coaching to staff, ensure that policies and procedures are followed, and that programmatic goals are achieved
  • responsible for written reports on field visits
  • oversees field paperwork, evaluations, and incident reports

Operations & Logistics

  • supports field logistics (i.e., medical runs, in-takes, discharges, parent visits, etc.)
  • assists with field support to the groups, as needed
  • coordinates gear needs and changes with Logistics Coordinator
  • has a vehicle that can transport group needs such as food, water, and wood and fits at least four field staff to help support staff exchange
  • share on-call responsibilities over the weekends

Program Development

  • collaborates with the Clinical Team and Leadership on continually developing and improving the program and curriculum

Risk Management

  • responsible for ensuring program policies and procedures are followed in the field
  • oversees risk management at all levels of field operations
  • coordinates on-going or acute medical concerns with Medical Coordinator
  • oversees tracking system for Incident Reports and reports trends to Field Department and Leadership
