Job Description

Position Summary

Supervises health and well-being standards for the camp population and facilities. Manages campers’ health and safety through daily treatments, medicine, record keeping, and logging injuries into our software.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assume responsibility for the total health of the camp
  • Review camper health history reports prior to arrival at camp
  • Organize and set-up of the Health Center
  • Complete an inventory of necessary medical supplies and equipment
  • Create and stock First Aid Kits for camp including:
    • Out of camp trips, camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, activity areas, waterfront, and other important areas of camp
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records including:
    • Staff and camper health forms, with special attention to immunization compliance
    • Health Center Log of daily clinic visits
    • Charts for Health Center In-patients
    • Progress notes for campers and staff with complex health issues
    • Daily reports of restricted activities for campers and staff
    • Medication Administration Records
    • Incident Report forms
  • Provide a staff orientation to health services at camp which includes:
    • Overview of standing orders, specific camper health and social needs, Health Center rules, emergency procedures, staff health assessment of campers, policies on contacting parents, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting and universal precautions
  • Check all health forms of campers and staff and inform administrative staff of any specific health problems
  • Communicate between camper families and physicians as needed
  • Complete a health screening of all campers and staff who are arriving and departing from camp including:
    • Verification of health history and examination
    • Verification of emergency authorization
    • History of recent exposure to communicable disease
    • Review of the CCSC policies for the collection, storage, and administration of medications
    • General health assessment, including lice and ring worm check
  • Assist in a general health screening of all campers and staff during the summer including a general inspection of cabins, unit areas, showers, bathrooms, and observation of general camper and staff health
  • Log all camper visits and medications distributed and make additional notes as necessary
  • Operate the Health Center, utilizing the current standing orders for issuing treatment and medications
  • Collect, store, and administer medications to campers and staff
  • Research and contact health resources in the community as needed by campers and staff
  • Prepare a summary and evaluation of the camp season including, but not limited to, inventories, staff evaluations, camper reports on health problems, and make recommendations for the following season
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills & Qualifications

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Experience working with children and young adults
  • Must be proficient operating various types of software
  • Must be able to efficiently review a camper’s health profile and medications
  • Ability to originate, update, and monitor health care plan, maintain records, and deal with emergencies
  • Desire to live and work in a camp community
  • Ability to live and work in the outdoors in conditions including but not limited to loud noises, heat, rain and cool temperatures.
  • Ability to walk a mile over uneven terrain, after dark if necessary
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to emergencies
  • Ability to observe and assess unsanitary or unhealthy conditions of camp
  • Ability to communicate and work with participating groups
  • Current driver’s license and ability to drive to medical treatment locations
  • Must be a non-smoker
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to read prescriptions and health exams from physicians
  • Ability to get to remote locations of camp property quickly
  • Follow uniform standards and policies
  • Must be able to pass required background checks
