Junior Counselor

Job Description

Position Summary

Safely guide campers to and from activity periods. Support general counselors during activity sessions. Support and/or assist general counselors as necessary during camp activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in a group
  • Develop opportunities for interaction between campers and staff
  • Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during camp
  • Help each participant meet the goals established by the camp for camper development
  • Continuously engages with campers throughout the day
  • Monitors campers for signs of homesickness or other concerns and handles appropriately
  • Transfer campers from one activity to the next activity
  • Guide cabin or unit groups and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities
  • Carry out established roles for supervising camper health
  • Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety regulations
  • Assist in the development of cabin or unit activity plans in conjunction with general counselors
  • Help to supervise all assigned aspects of the campers day including morning flag pole, cabin clean-up, meal times, rest hour, evening activities, getting ready for bed, and after hours duty as assigned
  • Attend and complete pre-camp training; as a result: instruct campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills, evacuating the cabin, etc.
  • Help campers plan their participation in unit-wide, camp-wide programs, and elective activities
  • Model and promote the mission of Girl Scouting
  • Follow uniform standards and policies
  • Assist in teaching or leading an activity as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Skills & Qualifications

  • Must have completed a CIT or similar program
  • Minimum age of 16 years old
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications or willingness to obtain
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
  • Ability to live and work in the outdoors in conditions including but not limited to loud noises, heat, rain and cool temperatures.
  • Ability to walk a mile over uneven terrain
  • Ability to relate to one’s peer group
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Ability to assist in teaching an activity
  • Ability to work weekends throughout the camp season
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  • Must be able to pass required background check
