     – This is a remote, community living situation located  ~1 hour outside of Asheville, NC in the Pisgah National Forrest. Due to the requirements of the job, we ask that our Logistics Managers live at our base camp facility. Read on for more details.

The NCOBS Logistics Manager (LM) position is a basecamp leadership role that supports the NCOBS Program Director (PD). The LM is responsible for the day to day operations of the logistical department by supporting the basecamp and courses in the field. This includes the management and supervision of all warehouse and logistics facilities, upkeep and organization, gear packing, and overseeing the ordering and maintenance of gear; food hut duties of ordering food and consumable items, upkeep and organization, and food packing; and basecamp duties of vehicle upkeep, town runs, and crew transportation.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the base leadership team in maintaining a positive and professional work environment and living community at base camp.
  • Establish and maintain a positive working environment within warehouse and food hut and other logistical work spaces.
  • Assist the PD in base camp opening and closing for the season.
  • Maintain exceptional warehouse and food room organization, operation, and cleanliness.
  • Train logistics coordinators, including training staff on the risk management and safety practices associated with the base’s warehouse, food hut, and all routine logistics duties.
  • Create, with consultation from the PD and/or NCOBS Safety Director, appropriate risk management plans for any new logistics duties or non-routine logistics operations.
  • Enforce safety policies, procedures, and practices for the base’s warehouse, food hut, and other logistics work spaces and duties.
  • In conjunction with the program director and director of safety, monitor, and address safety issues related to logistics staff physical work spaces.
  • Work cooperatively with PD and program staff to ensure that the logistical needs of courses and base camp facilities are met.
  • Manage student needs, dietary needs and allergies, and appropriate menu design. This may include assisting field staff with appropriate menu design or designing the menu for a course
  •  Work with Facilities Director to ensure logistics workspaces and operations meet OSHA workplace health and safety guidelines.
  • Work with the NCOBS Program Resource Manager (PRM) to ensure quantity and quality of field equipment is sufficient to meet the needs of current and projected courses.
  • Work with the PRM to ensure all necessary purchases are made prior to and during each season; assist PRM in managing the field equipment and program supplies budget including reviewing and coding applicable receipts.
  • Work with PRM or designee to facilitate seasonal gear and food transfers between basecamps and complete an inventory at season end.
  • Manage all repairs and maintenance of field equipment.
  • Oversee the issue and de-issue of gear, including the inventory of cleaning supplies.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with food vendors and suppliers.
  • Track, report, and manage all expenses for the logistics department. 
  • Manage the scheduling of the base camp vehicle fleet and assist site manager with vehicle maintenance and site manager’s responsibilities.
  • Train, supervise, and schedule logistical coordinators.
  • Maintain documentation of all logistics systems as a resource for successors of the position.
  • Other duties as assigned.
     

Qualifications:

  • Minimum one year working for Outward Bound or related programs. Preference given to candidates with prior logistics management experience.
  • Personal and professional values consistent with the NCOBS mission, values, and principles.
  • Strong knowledge of Outward Bound history, standards, and programs.
  • Must be able to drive a 15-passenger van with a box trailer; Must possess a clean motor vehicle record.
  • Experience with community living.
  • Able to participate in all base activities; Able to lift 75 pounds.
  • Current WFA and CPR at minimum; WFR and CPR preferred.
  • Able to give and receive timely, effective oral and written feedback.
  • Effective leadership, supervisory, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong personal initiative, motivation, and resourcefulness.
  • Strong presentation, writing, and computer skills.
  • Business management skills including budget tracking and management.
  • Cooperative attitude and ability to be flexible.

Compensation and Benefits:  

  • Estimated 22 days / month for the length of the agreement. Salary is a per-diem rate based on previous experience and qualification for the position. ($82 – $118 / day)

Location Details:

Facilities

The N.C. Mountains base camps are comprised of several buildings including larger office and warehouse structures that support the wilderness operations of the school. Base camps are approximately 30-45 minutes from the nearest town and embody a community living environment.

Housing

You will be assigned a staff cabin space that you will have to yourself or share with one staff member. Staff cabins are rustic but comfortable; laundry, showers, internet, a group kitchen, and recreational spaces are all available at the base camps.

Food

Daily meals are provided when working. lunch and dinner are made each day by the Kitchen Manager. While all food is provided, staff are expected to make their own breakfast.
