Dunn School Logistics Coordinator Job Announcement Fall 2017
Dunn School is a private boarding and day school, located 30 miles north of Santa Barbara in Los Olivos California. In addition to completing college preparatory classes, students are expected to complete an outdoor education curriculum that focuses on leadership, community, environmental respect, and transference of experience to life skills. The 6th through 12th grade curriculum is designed to build the students’ self esteem, confidence, environmental awareness, and facilitate one on one personal interaction between many aspects of the school. Many of our trips are extended multi-day wilderness outings that include activities such as backpacking, peak ascents, rock climbing, cave exploration, solos, and sea kayaking. Trips are conducted in various central and southern California locations.
Dunn School is currently a logistics coordinator for our fall trip season. We are looking for a dynamic hard working individual who seeks to build great relationships with students and school faculty. The Dunn Outdoor Education program is looking for an outdoor educator with great ideas to help our program evolve. At Dunn the logistics coordinator plays a pivotal role in linking the wilderness and the classroom.
Trips run from 4 to 9 days and many involve a wilderness component. The logistics coordinator will be responsible for much of the pre trip preparations. This may include planning menus, buying food, checking gear, scouting trails and organizing paperwork. During course days, the logistics coordinator may be responsible for managing a climbing site or aiding field groups as needed. Other trips they may be a full field instructor and responsible for student backcountry travel and safety. In this role responsibilities include risk management, student health and well-being, administration of first aid, curriculum delivery, daily debrief and many more. Once each trip returns to campus, students will complete the lion’s share of cleaning under instructor and faculty supervision. The logistics coordinator is responsible for supervising instructors to make sure post trip tasks get completed in a timely manner.
Logistics Coordinator / Rock Climbing Specialist
Assorted dates: August 25th – November 4th, Includes 28 field days,
1 person needed
Menu planning, food purchasing, top-rope climbing supervision, logistical support, backpacking
-Prior experience leading youth on extended trips in a wilderness setting.
- NOLS and Outward bound experience very helpful.
-Experience with managing top tope rock climbing,
- Experience instructing backpacking, & natural history
-Ability to be a role model to students
-Willingness to be flexible to changing conditions and program demands
-Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and CPR certifications
-Clean Driving Record
- AMGA Single Pitch Instructor or equivalent strongly preferred
-Ability to pass a background check
-Pay for the logistics coordinator position is based on a $12/hour base rate with overtime pay for field days. It is estimated the total compensation for the term of employment will be $4500
-Housing is provided while on campus before and after trips in our shared bunkroom.
