Job Description

Interlochen Center for the Arts is looking to hire Program Directors for the 2019 Camp season. The dates of the agreement are 6/13/19-8/6/19 and the stipend for the entire duration of the agreement is $2,850.  The Program Director will lead division staff in the coordination and execution of age-appropriate recreation activities, complementing the artistic program.  The Program Director plans and organizes all recreational activities, co-recreational activities, oversees the recreation facilities and storage, and coordinates recreational classes, food and special activities within the camp division. The Program Director is the liaison between the division and the recreation program and is responsible for cultivating community through outdoor and recreation programming.  Other details include:

  • The Program Director plans and organizes all recreational activities, co-recreational activities, oversees the recreation hut, coordinates recreational classes, food and special activities within the camp division. The Program Director is the liaison between the division and the recreation program. The Program Director will establish a comprehensive calendar of events for the 6 weeks of camp.

  • The Program Director shares divisional administrative duties as assigned by the Division Director including participation in Administrative and divisional staff meetings, and helping with administrative coverage in the division.

  • The Program Director will assist with occasional overnight coverage for managing staff days off.

  • Camp life staff participate in the development and implementation of activities for campers within division.

  • Camp life staff are expected to deliver one age-appropriate cabin night activity each week.

  • Camp life staff must have the ability to effectively engage in appropriate communication (verbal and non-verbal) with students and other staff.

  • Camp life staff supervise campers on main camp, in division, at performances, and off campus.

  • Cabin counselors attend weekly unit and divisional staff meetings and communicate with parents.  

  • Ability to be certified as an authorized driver through Interlochen’s process. Driving record evaluated.

  • Camp life staff have secondary job assignments within their camp division or in other departments.  These assignments take between 6-8 hours each week and can fall within the following areas: Mailroom, Printshop, Attendance, Food Service, Division Office Duty, Division recreation or crafts, or Lifeguarding (additional stipend for this assignment and earlier arrival date). Due to the daily contact time with campers and their developmental needs, counselors in the junior divisions do not have secondary job assignments.

Qualifications:

  • Outdoor Education background is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills
  • Demonstrated experience working in recreation and/or activities settings and situations.

  • A commitment to fun

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple commitments, meet deadlines, and work as a team.

  • Experience with mentoring or staff supervision is desired.

  • A desire to work with youth, a willingness to live in a cabin and work in a rustic camp environment, an understanding of the developmental needs of youth.

  • An ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive and respectful manner.  

  • An ability to assist or lead activities related to the topic and position.

  • An ability to communicate effectively and work both independently and as part of a larger team is essential.

  • Staff must be 18 years of age by June 15 and have graduated from high school this academic year (or prior years) with preference given to those who show evidence of at least one year of living independently.

  • Camp life staff must show evidence of a desire to work with youth, a willingness to live in a cabin and work in a rustic camp environment, an understanding of the developmental needs of adolescents.

  • Camp life staff must show evidence of an ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive and respectful manner and to communicate effectively and work both independently and as part of a larger team.

  • Camp life staff must have the ability to assist or lead recreation or waterfront activities.
