PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Pacific Quest is an outdoor therapeutic program for struggling teens and young adults, located on the Big Island of Hawaii. Pacific Quest offers a clinical, yet holistic approach to treatment, moving beyond traditional wilderness therapy and teaching sustainable life skills.

Pacific Quest's proprietary therapeutic model is a groundbreaking approach that utilizes Horticulture Therapy to create concrete metaphors for its students as they cultivate their own health and happiness.

PRIMARY PURPOSE

To provide individualized, sustainable, personal development within a safe, structured, experiential and natural environment in a culture of unconditional support and personal responsibility. Program Guide staff teams consist of two to four staff members, including at a minimum a Lead Program Guide and a Wellness Program Guide. Each staff member will work eight-days on, six-days off from Thursday to Thursday.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor of students and management of the group dynamic
  • Risk assessment and management in accordance with field manual
  • Regular, clear communication with staff team and supervisors
  • Execution of medication and wellness plans as mandated by Medical Director
  • Role model for students the rules and behaviors we ask them to follow
  • Learn and show continued growth through the mastery of both Pacific Quest “hard skills” (ie. proper kitchen procedures) and “soft skills” (ie. therapeutic intervention techniques)
  • Participate in work projects with the students
  • Facilitate daily roles for students
  • Maintain current NVCI (non-violent crisis intervention) training
  • Follow daily schedule and routines as mandated by supervisors
  • Teach lessons; facilitate learning about gardening, sustainable life and living skills, and Hawaiian culture
  • Demonstrates sound judgment in regards to risk management, student safety, and supervision of students
  • Additional duties as assigned

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Psychology, Farming/Agro ecology or Outdoor Education/Leadership
  • Experience with “at-risk” youth or within wilderness therapy is a huge plus
  • Requires ability to be a team player, to form mutually respectful relationship with staff and to grow professionally in meeting the challenges of the position
  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Valid CPR/First Aid certifications
  • Valid driver’s license with clean record
  • Able to pass thorough background check
  • Able to pass drug screen
  • Provide physician clearance to meet the physical requirements of this position
  • Annual physical and TB clearance required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

With or without reasonable accommodation, the physical and mental requirements of this job may include the following: seeing, hearing, speaking, and writing clearly. Occasional reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, frequent sitting, standing and walking, may be required for long periods of time and may involve climbing stairs, walking up inclines and on uneven terrain. Additional physical requirements may include, frequent lifting and or moving up to 50 pounds.
