Organization

The Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS) is a non-profit adventure-based education organization that emphasizes personal growth through challenge and experience.  For over 50 years, our wilderness courses have focused on inspiring responsibility, teamwork, confidence, compassion, and environmental and community stewardship.

Summary

The Safety Manager works under the supervision of the Director of Program Operations and Safety and is responsible for coordinating school-wide safety functions, overseeing program quality initiatives and supporting the continual improvement of program operations.

The Safety Manager facilitates the collection, maintenance, and distribution of all incident and safety-related materials including the national incident database. They support the implementation of strategic initiatives at COBS by managing projects as directed by the Director of Program Operations and Safety.

This is a management position, with significant responsibilities to monitor and maintain COBS wide safety and quality systems and processes. It is an office-based position, with frequent field visits/travel as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety and Risk Management

  • Support implementation of the National Safety Standards throughout COBS.
  • Contribute to and track the development of COBS annual safety priorities.
  • Monitor compliance with Outward Bound USA (OBUSA) and COBS policies and procedures.
  • Oversee incident reporting and the incident reporting database in line with COBS and OBUSA standards. 
  • Conduct incident investigations as directed by the DPOS.
  • Maintain COBS internal policy documentation and staff safety resources, updating annually.
  • Maintain COBS emergency response system and train staff in its implementation.
  • Hold Operations Officer role in the COBS emergency response system as required.
  • Support and undertake COBS safety audits and annual safety reviews.
  • Conduct program reconnaissance and draft New Program Plans for  approval.
  • Manage and maintain on an annual basis, all program-related subcontractor agreements.
  • Deliver COBS training as required.

Occupational Safety and Health

  • Support Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) management throughout the organization, identifying areas outside of compliance and build systems to address areas of concern.
  • Coordinate COBS Incident Support Network.

Administration and Reporting

  • Lead COBS Safety Working Group, ensuring continual improvement in safety learnings and systems throughout the school.  
  • Support the Program Operations and Safety Director in working with the national safety department.
  • Participate in OBUSA working groups as directed by the Operations and Safety Director.
  • Draft Trimester Safety Reports for approval by the Operations and Safety Director.
  • Draft the Annual Program Operations and Safety Report.

Special Projects

  • Implementation of OBUSA national initiatives.
  • Implementation of COBS grant initiatives.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Microsoft Suite: Intermediate working knowledge of office, word, and excel. Ability to build excel spreadsheets, sort, and use functions.
  • Driving: Good driving record.
  • Strong leadership, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Able to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. This job requires a high level of communication skills.
  • Strong desicion making skills, ability to prioritize organizationa and safety needs. 

Education and Work Experience

  • Experience in COBS activities, and an understanding of our course areas. 
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the outdoor education field, including training and safety management responsibilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting at a desk or computer at least 60% of the time.
  • Must be able to lift 20+ pounds
  • Ability to undertake field visits in extreme environments. 

Schedule, Compensation, and Benefits

  • Full-time, hourly, non-exempt position.
  • The position is based in Denver at COBS HQ
  • Salary Range $19.50-24.03
