Youth Education Program Intern- Winter/Spring
The Colorado Mountain Club’s Youth Education Program (YEP) provides active learning through outdoor and adventure education. YEP uses an experiential approach to connect youth with their local surroundings, making learning relevant and fun by utilizing Colorado’s greatest natural resource: the mountains! Programming at YEP consists of day programs for students K-12 throughout the greater Denver area. Programs take place at the American Mountaineering Center, in schools, and at outdoor field locations.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Positive attitude and sense of humor.
- Ability to relate to school-age children and adults of all backgrounds; including classroom behavior management.
- Self-directed, innovative thinker.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- One or more of the following:
- Experience in natural science or related field.
- Experience working in outdoor hiking and climbing programs.
- Experience with snow, avalanche science, or snowshoeing (Winter only)
- Experience facilitating teambuilding and group games.
- Experience teaching youth from diverse backgrounds in environmental education and/or adventure education.
- Instruct curriculum for the Youth Education Program (YEP). Activities are indoors/outdoors and are experiential, using models, props, games, and other hands-on teaching methods. Participants are children in grades K-12, and adult chaperones. Typically instruction will occur in groups of 20 people or less.
- Assistant instructor for indoor and outdoor rock climbing and slacklining.
- Assistant instructor for outdoor snowshoeing, ecology, and geology hikes.
- Assistant instructor for science curriculum in the classroom.
- Facilitate a positive, fun learning environment through appropriate classroom behavior management, language and teaching methods.
- Prepare activities, materials, and equipment for programs as needed. Clean up program areas.
- Provide curriculum feedback and ideas to the YEP program design team.
- Assist with general office administration tasks for the YEP program.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Interest in the outdoors, particularly science, natural history or recreation.
- Experience working with youth.
- Rock climbing experience, demonstrating competency in the fundamental skills including: belaying, back-up belaying, knot tying, equipment, and communication (highly preferred).
- First Aid and CPR desired.
- Able to carry loads up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to provide personal transportation to and from the American Mountaineering Center in Golden, CO.
Time Commitment & Compensation
- 15-20 hours per week, Jan- late May (dates flexible).
- This is an unpaid internship with a small travel stipend.
