This is a 6-hour pre-conference workshop offered at the Wilderness Risk Management Conference in Portland, OR on Oct 18, 2023. The workshop will run from 8 AM – 4 PM, with an hour break for lunch from 12-1.

Traditional approaches to safety management have gotten us to a certain point, but to continue to make progress, outdoor programs can learn from progress being made in safety science and research from other industries. Safety Differently, also known as Safety II, is a research-based, emerging approach to safety management that has been adopted by industries that operate in complex, inherently hazardous settings such as the medical industry, aerospace, industrial manufacturing, wildfire management, and many others. What’s new, what have we learned, and how can outdoor and experiential education programs adopt and adapt practical applications of Safety Differently for their organizations?

This interactive session will give participants opportunities to apply a Safety Differently mindset to their organizations and develop practical tools to move the conversation forward after the conference is over.

Registration for the full WRMC conference is recommended but optional – you can also register just for this workshop, if you like.
