Job Description

Position Overview:

This position is responsible for ensuring a safe, fun, engaging, and educational experience for all junior unit campers (age ranging between 1st-6th grade). Counselors are responsible for aiding in camper safety through supervision, assist with appropriate camp behavior management strategies, and support specialists during program blocks.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. This role will come in contact with campers, families, visitors, vendors and employees. Each of these persons may have visible and invisible qualities that makes that person unique. This includes race, gender, age, sexuality, ability, religion, national origin, gender identity, and other identities. This role requires sustaining an inclusive and equitable learning and working environments by having respectful and considerate behavior, thoughtful and constructive speech to all.
  2. Act as role model for campers and establish cabin expectations and norms, provide first line of support for campers including behavior management, homesickness, conflict management, and team building.
  3. Ensure safety of all campers in cabin including setting clear safety expectations, observing and engaging campers while in their care, assessing the appropriateness of camper behaviors, following emergency procedures and all Covid-19 safety protocols.
  4. Counselors are also responsible for leading various activities for campers including, but not limited to: games and sports, songs, arts and crafts, science experiments, cooking projects, and field trip activities, etc.

Job Duties:

  • Displays excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers, volunteers, parents, and contractors; including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
  • Lead and live with a group of 3 to 6* youth including gathering camper interests for scheduling, setting expectations, providing active behavior management and being a safe and supportive mentor during their time at camp. *Reduced capacity due to Covid-19 safety protocols.
  • Monitors and protects the health and safety of campers. Stays alert for any signs of illness or fatigue and communicate concerns to Unit Coordinator as soon as possible.
  • Assist in coordinating cabin, unit and all-camp activity planning and facilitation including events such as free choice, campfires, group games, skit night, etc.
  • Assist with the organization of unit space and supplies including coordinating end-of-summer inventory recording systems.
  • Assists with individual, cabin, unit, and all camp activities.
  • Learn, teach, and lead camp songs, games, and team-builders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Expectations for All Camp Staff:

  • Abide and apply the personnel and program policies of the camp.
  • Ensure and maintain the cleanliness of camp facilities, equipment, and grounds including Covid-19 safety protocols, weekly and end-of-summer cleaning and pack-up.
  • Observe good health habits, including sufficient sleep, good hygiene, reasonable eating habits and cooperation with the Medical Staff and Camp Director in case of illness.
  • Maintain punctual, regular and predictable attendance.
  • Attend pre-camp training and regular on-site staff meetings throughout the summer
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Respectfully takes direction from supervisor.
  • Support the mission, purpose and leadership of Camp Fire and projects a positive image of Camp Fire.
  • Follow all safety guidelines including the completion of accident/incident reports as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to assemble reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Computer Skills:

Has the minimal skills necessary to operate a computer. Can log on to a computer system, navigate in windows, perform simple tasks within applications and enter information into a database.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to assess problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and seek supervisory support when necessary. Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions. Ability to manage several abstract and concrete variables.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

This position requires a valid Oregon Food Handler’s card, First Aid & CPR certification and completion of Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse online training.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee must frequently move up to 25 pounds and occasionally move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to traverse varied terrain over the 60 acres of main camp, be stationary for prolonged periods, gather supplies from various heights and locations. In compliance with covid-19 protocols, employees are asked to wear a face mask when not actively consuming food/beverage.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions 95% of the time. The employee may be occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and work in high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with occasional periods of excessive noise (i.e. meal times, talent show).

Availability:  Staff training for this position begins 6/17 at 9am. There is a small amount of flexibility for staff who need to arrive at a slightly later date, but it is preferred that all staff are able to attend all of training. Once staff training begins, staff will live at camp for the summer, with one day off per week (Saturday). Pay rate is $50 per day and includes room and board. Last day on site for Counselors is 8/14.
