Job Description

Plymouth State University is seeking a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Practice in Adventure Education. The Adventure Education program is housed in the Health and Human Performance administrative unit of the School of Health. It offers a 120-credit Bachelor of Science Adventure Education degree or a 96-credit Applied Bachelor of Outdoor Adventure Leadership degree. Students are prepared for a range of careers in adventure, experiential or outdoor education and leadership. An important hallmark of the program is that students receive instruction combining foundational theory with practical skills and have numerous opportunities for applied and experiential learning. Teaching responsibilities can include any core course of the BS in Adventure Education or the AB Outdoor Adventure Leadership degree programs.

Duties/Responsibilities

Teaching of undergraduate courses within the Adventure Education program. The main portion of the position involves teaching the core courses of both degree programs, a total of 15-16 credits per semester. These courses include a mix of theory and practice, with titles such as Foundations of Adventure Education; Canoe Paddling Fundamentals; Adventure Education Teaching Theory and Methods; Adventure Processing and Facilitation; Wilderness Expedition; Adventure Leadership and Group Management; Risk Management in Adventure Education; Philosophy and Theory of Adventure Education; Internship. This portion also includes some specialized administrative tasks required to run the program, such as managing ropes course inspections, WMNF permits or transportation logistics.

Full time Assistant Professor of Practice faculty are required to provide service to the University through participation in activities that contribute to faculty governance such as program coordination, major policy committee participation, community engagement activities, and admissions initiatives.
