Job Type: Contract, Seasonal

Job Description

North Star Camp is a residential boys summer camp in Northern Wisconsin. Founded in 1945, we provide meaningful summer experiences for kids from all over the US to make new friends, try new activities, grow as individuals and learn life skills.  North Star provides a diverse elective-based program consisting of athletics, watersports, music & arts, and adventure activities, as well as a top notch wilderness trip program. Each summer, we hire approximately 90 staff from all over the US and abroad and we are actively hiring wilderness trip leaders for the summer of 2021!

Are you looking for the most fun job of your life and the ability to spend your summer outdoors, guiding canoeing and hiking trips throughout the Upper Midwest?  Our trip leaders will lead groups of 10-12 kids and 2-3 adults on canoeing and hiking trips to places like Quetico Provincial Park, The Porcupine Mountains, The Brule and The Flambeau Rivers.  Every cabin at North Star goes on one wilderness trip each summer, varying in length (2-day/1-night for our youngest campers through 9-day/8-night for our oldest campers) and difficulty.  Our trip leaders are responsible for making the trips fun and safe.  You will be responsible for navigating the cabin on the trip, cooking meals, and instilling a love of the environment in each participant.  North Star is a strong believer in the “Leave No Trace” camping philosophy.

North Star pays a very competitive summer salary (including room & board), reimburses for travel expenses, and will also pay for various certification courses. All of our trip leaders must be Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and Life Guard certified — and North Star will cover the cost of expenses for these courses.

All candidates are subject to a background check. We are a smoke free environment and all staff members must be able to pass a drug screening at the start of the summer.  Pre-camp orientation for our trip leaders begins on June 1, 2021 (if you are already WFR certified, otherwise orientation and training begins on May 20, 2021).   The summer camp session runs from June 21 – August 13.

Important Note re: COVID-19

North Star Camp operated successfully with over 170 campers and nearly 100 staff during the summer of 2020 with no positive COVD-19 test results after multiple testing rounds. We expect to be fully operational again in 2021 and plan on running our trip program again once our quarantine period is over and camp has been deemed COVID-19 free. Operating amidst a pandemic requires putting into place comprehensive protocols aimed at keeping all campers and staff healthy and safe, while also ensuring that our program is meaningful and fun. These protocols add additional layers of health and safety procedures and also place some limitations on all members. We anticipate that many of these protocols will be in place in 2021 to ensure that we are protecting every camper and staff member. Some protocols may include but are not limited to wearing face coverings in certain areas around camp, observing social distancing and small group podding measures, quarantining before camp and at the beginning of the session, and/or participating in COVID-19 testing.  As part of our hiring process, every prospective staff member will be provided with our COVID-19 protocols to ensure that they understand how they will be a part of keeping our community healthy.  We expect all staff members to not only abide by the protocols, but help enforce them as well to help ensure the health and safety of our North Star community.
