Job Description

The Department of Campus Recreation at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Outdoor and Bicycle Programs Intern. This internship is designed to help qualified candidates build focused experience to pursue a career in outdoor and bicycle related university programming. This is a 12-month, 30-40 hours per week position.

The Outdoor and Bicycle Programs Intern reports directly to the Assistant Director of Outdoor and Bicycle Programs and will be responsible for assisting in the following areas:

Outdoor Adventure Program 60%

Summer Kayak Center 25%

Outdoor Center Rentals 10%

Bike Shop and Bike Share Program 5%

Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in administrative duties including risk management, web updates, marketing, data entry, record keeping, participation reporting, quality control, inventory, organization, planning and other duties as assigned

Serve as lead instructor for some Outdoor Adventure and Kayak Center programs including: backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, surfing, mountain biking, bike touring and/or skiing

Assist in the day to day management and operation of the Summer Kayak Center

Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, supervision and mentoring of student outdoor and bicycle program staff

Target Start Date: May 18, 2020

Interns must attend staff training in Lowell May 20-22.  ACA L1- L2 Kayak Touring course is expected and provided May 26-38.   Housing access and move in will be available May 18 and 19.

End Date: May 15, 2021, flexible

About Lowell:

Lowell is a Mill City born in the industrial revolution era.  It is currently a medium sized city of approximately 111,000 people.  It is approximately 45 miles away from Boston. 

Lowell is central to many excellent outdoor recreation opportunities; miles of rail trails, single track mountain biking and river paddling are accessible right from campus.  Surfing and sea kayaking on the Atlantic coast as well as rock climbing, backpacking or mountaineering in mountains of MA, NH and VT a short drive away.

 

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or in pursuit of bachelor’s degree

Highly motivated to learn and progress in the field of outdoor adventure programming and/or higher education

Previous experience in leading outdoor trips in a programmatic or professional context

Excellent communication and decision making skills, and ability to relate to a diverse student population

Familiarity with current trends and practices within the outdoor recreation and higher education fields

Ability to thrive in a busy and dynamic environment

Has a current driver’s license, a clean driving record and the ability to drive 12 passenger van with trailer

Ability to work a flexible schedule including a significant amount of evenings and weekends

Certified as Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder (both offered with employment)

Certified or actively pursuing skills development toward certification in one or more of our offered outdoor activity areas
