Summary:

North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) is the oldest independent Outward Bound school in the country. The Scottsmoor base runs programming that serves an at-risk population through structured wilderness experiences aimed at equipping students with the life skills needed to navigate everyday life. Courses include a 20-day river and coastal canoe expedition along with a 10-day home and school-oriented follow-up phase. The Internship is a training and orientation position through which interns become acquainted with all areas of our programming and gain the necessary training, guidance, and support to fulfill the educational objectives of NCOBS At-risk programming while meeting curriculum and safety requirements. This position works with an array of staff in our At-Risk programming, including Instructors, Logistics Staff, Course Directors, Family Coordinators, and Base Administrators, and explores how we run our programming from initial student in-take through post-expedition follow up with families. In this, a majority of your time will be spent in the logistics department of the school working to support courses, their instructors, and the students we serve.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for understanding and following all NCOBS program policies and procedures.
  • Serve as NCOBS representative for DJJ, DOE, clients, families, and community organizations.
  • Role model OB Instructor values throughout course including physical and mental requirements.
  • Participate in At-risk New Staff Training and all pre-course orientations.
  • Assist in the coordination of all logistics and planning of courses with Instructional Team, Course Director, Logistics and base site staff.
  • Assist in base site care, transports, and other logistical needs.
  • Assist in the implementation of FINS program evaluation.
  • Set pertinent goals for development. Seek out feedback and utilize this in goal setting.
  • Assist in the coordination of behavioral and first aid situations, evacuations and early departures with Instructional Team.
  • Assist in the facilitation of challenge course phase of program.
  • This position will not supervise student groups alone, transport student groups alone, or execute any type of physical restraint.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned. 
     

Physical Ability:

  • Ability to participate in vigorous to moderate physical activity including but not limited to running, swimming, canoeing, challenge course, and backpacking.
  • Ability to lift and move a minimum of 40 pounds.
     

Qualifications:

  • Have first aid competence appropriate to course/activities, to include as a minimum: current CPR and first aid certification; management of bleeding and anaphylactic emergencies; and, as appropriate, specialized training for the course.
  • Relate well to others and work effectively with a variety of people.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment regarding policy and procedure and support the instructional team to implement safety practices.
  • Willing to work in team situations and support accordingly.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the methodologies and philosophy of Outward Bound.
  • Willing to learn and demonstrate competency in skills necessary for program environment and program expectations. This includes following all NCOBS, At-Risk, and LNT policies and practices.
  • Willing to acquire knowledge in the skills pertinent to the program area of employment.
  • Valid Driver’s License held for a minimum of three years and successfully complete NCOBS Florida Driver and Trailer Test.
  • Pass Local Background Check, Preliminary Screening, and Department of Juvenile Justice Background/Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Medical clearance. 
  • Competent writing and computer skills.
     

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Food stipend and housing provided during the duration of the internship.
