Job Description

Princeton University’s Outdoor Action (OA) program within the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students (ODUS) seeks an energetic, collaborative, and innovative candidate to serve as Trips Coordinator. For over 45 years, the Outdoor Action program has provided opportunities to experience outdoor adventure for the Princeton University community. From facilitating a multi-day outdoor trips for nearly half of the first-year class of students, to offering leadership development training in outdoor and facilitation skills, to hosting day and overnight outdoor experiences, the goal of Outdoor Action is to provide an opportunity for all students to engage with the outdoors.

Position Description

Under the direction of the director of Outdoor Action, the trips coordinator provides direct programming services and operational and logistics oversight of various aspects of the Outdoor Action Program. Duties will include developing and supervising trip activities during the academic year, managing program facilities, equipment, and student staff, and logistical support for Orientation and Leader Training programs.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, 1-year term position.

Summary of Responsibilities

The trips coordinator has the primary responsibility of planning weekly trips and activities throughout the academic year. This includes researching trip locations and planning route logistics, developing budgets and reconcile expenses following the trip, tracking attendance of participants, and preparing all equipment and materials. The trips coordinator will recruit, train, and supervise student leaders as well as work with campus offices and departments to develop and execute programs.

The trips coordinator will manage the equipment room including take inventory of all equipment and perform equipment safety checks on a scheduled basis, oversee the equipment rental program, and train and supervise student employees to support the management of the equipment room. This position will develop a marketing plan to promote weekly trips through social media, program website and weekly newsletter in coordination with the ODUS Manager of Strategic Communications. The trips coordinator is responsible for developing and conducting post-trip surveys of participants and produce a report based on the results.

In supporting Outdoor Action training programs, the trips coordinator will work with the director and program coordinator with leader training in outdoor skills and leadership development as well as provide support with Orientation program logistics. As a member of the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, the trips coordinator will also support student initiatives and programs.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • General understanding of outdoor education principles
  • Experience leading multi-day outdoor trips in back-country settings
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time
  • Writing skills for program documentation and marketing programs
  • Willingness to work some nights and weekends
  • Current US Driver’s License and capable of fulfilling the University’s requirements for van driver authorization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPR certification, Wilderness Advanced First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification
  • Experience in rock climbing, biking, and/or outdoor water activities
  • Experience in logistical and outdoor trip planning operations
  • Experience with databases and social media communications
