This is a full-time seasonal camp counselor and outdoor guiding position based in Durango, CO from 5/27/24 – 8/12/24 for a total of ten weeks. Ideal applicants include those who are at least 18+ years old and have some personal or professional experience in outdoor education, youth development, childcare, and/or summer camps! However, this is an entry-level position, and we encourage all interested applicants to apply!

Minimum Requirements:

At least 18 years old
Valid Driver’s License
Able to pass a federal and Colorado background check
Able to work in a rustic, outdoor environment
Able to carry a heavy backpack (30-50 lb) for 2-12 miles/day on rugged backcountry trails

Preferred Qualifications:

Youth development or childcare experience
Outdoor education or guiding experience
Personal outdoor recreation experience especially backpacking
Summer camp experience

Our Assistant Counselors are responsible for providing leadership (in tandem with a Head Counselor) in a cabin of 4-6 campers in one of our four distinct age groups in addition to co-leading backcountry wilderness trips between 2-5 days in length throughout the summer in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado and canyon country of southeastern Utah. We provide a comprehensive two-week Staff Training to cover all aspects of our program ranging from unique Colvig culture and traditions, youth development, and outdoor skill development and leadership. Assistant Counselors take a secondary leadership role in the cabin and on trips to our Head Counselors but are expected to maintain active participation in decision-making processes, building relationships with your cabin of campers, and creating and delivering high-quality camp programming. Assistant Counselors are also responsible for cleaning/shift duties during the summer which include: dishwashing, helping setup for meals at the dining hall, taking out trash, sweeping/mopping, and other similar duties. Assistant Counselors are scheduled for these duties on a rotating basis and it is usually 2-3 Assistant Counselors per shift duty. Time in camp is split between camp programming and these cleaning duties.

Compensation:

We offer competitive compensation with Assistant Counselors earning a minimum of $4,000 for a full ten-week season (5/27/24 – 8/12/24).  All staff receive free housing and meals for the duration of their contract. Staff can also apply for reimbursable Travel Allowances ($0.13/road mile), field/experience bonuses, a Rental Assistance Program, and will receive bonuses for relevant certifications such as Wilderness First Aid, First Responder, LNT, Lifeguarding etc. Please click here for a description of our bonuses and travel reimbursement information.

Time-Off: 

Assistant Counselors receive one period of time off a week (about 16 hours) in addition to a 3.5 day break in between sessions and flexible time-off (between meals) that can be scheduled with their supervisor.
