Job Description

The Edwards Aquifer Research and Data Center at Texas State University seeks a highly self-motivated individual to join the Center as an Education Program Manager and Outreach Coordinator.

The Center is engaged in groundwater research, water quality analysis, and public education and outreach on aquatic resources and groundwater biology. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in and contribute substantially at a high-level in public education, marketing and communication, and collaborative grant writing and education research.

The Center has a summer Aquatic Science Adventure Camp program in addition to an Aquatic Science Field Days program during the school year. Combined, the programs gross over $130K annually. Under the direction of the Director, and with assistance from other staff, the successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of both programs and delivering superior educational experiences. Additionally, the successful candidate will promote greater awareness of the Center’s education programs through public outreach, marketing, and communications. The successful candidate will have substantial latitude to expand existing educational programs while evaluating opportunities to create additional education and outreach opportunities through grant-writing, fundraising, and project development. The successful candidate is expected to possess experience with and a strong desire for working with minors and interacting with the general public. This requires a passion to educate diverse audiences about aquatic sciences, and demonstrated experience in informal education and outreach. A history of excellent verbal and written communication is a requirement. The successful candidate will work with Center researchers and staff and will also be expected to work with other faculty and staff in Centers and Departments on the TX State campus to successfully apply for grants, and to incorporate current research and scientific topics into the education program. Managing seasonal student and teacher workers for varying periods during the year is expected, and the candidate will be responsible for recruiting and hiring staff members in support of the summer camps. Participation in community outreach activities are expected. The Director will promote, advertise, and market the education programs and the activities and image of the Center using a variety of traditional and social media and will ensure the financial profitability of the program. Work hours will support the needs of the programs including hours before 8am, evenings, and weekends. Long hours with extended schedules during the summer, with the potential for occasional overnight shifts.

Required Qualifications:

Experience supervising staff in camps or comparable youth-oriented program.
Ability and willingness to collaborate independently with faculty and staff in various Departments and Centers on the Texas State University campus.
Experience with program administration.
Willingness to perform essential camp-related tasks including but not limited to content development and delivery, chaperoning, clean-up, food preparation, driving, etc.
Willingness to work long hours and extended schedules during summer, with the potential for occasional overnight shifts.
Successful record of fundraising, grant application and/or grant management.
Excellent writing skills.
Excellent organization and time management skills.
Ability to work independently on multiple tasks simultaneously.
Demonstrated experience communicating with the public through oral presentation, interactive activities, popular articles, and digital and social media.
Application of experiential-based learning principles for children in formal and/or informal settings.
Valid Texas drivers’ license
Ability to pass back-ground check and work with minors
Ability to work in inclement outdoor conditions including extreme heat, sun, darkness, and in water.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Ability to participate in activities involving swimming, rafting, and caving.
