Environmental Educator at Fenton Ranch in the Jemez Mountains

 

Fenton Ranch is a residential environmental education facility affiliated with Manzano Day School.  It is located in a beautiful canyon in the Jemez Mountains 80 miles north of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fenton Ranch Summer Camp offers many activities that encourage growth for youth ages 6 to 14. Summer Camp includes activities such as exploring nature, fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing, as well as arts and crafts. These experiences help to foster respect and an appreciation for the natural world. Summer Camp encourages youth to grow as an individual by facilitating experiences that foster independence, self-confidence, and creative thinking. 

 

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and facilitate a variety of outdoor activities, such as: canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, archery, camping, campfires, noncompetitive games, fishing, and exploring. 

  • Lead and supervise a variety of residential camp activities, such as: meal time, clean-up activities, journaling, free time activities, craft projects, and bedtime. 

  • Supervise youth in an overnight dormitory setting. 

  • Supervise youth in overnight campouts off site.

  • Complete logistical and maintenance requests, as needed.

  • Play, laugh, and share in the joy of learning with very enthusiastic youth.

 

Position Dates: 

  • Staff Orientation will be June 26th through June 30th, 2023. 

  • Four sessions will take place between July 5th and July 28th, 2023. 

  • Weekends are free for exploring the area — ancient Ancestral Puebloan ruins, hot springs, and wilderness areas full of biking, hiking and rock climbing opportunities.  Nearby Jemez Springs is a pleasant mountain village, and Los Alamos is 40 miles away.

 

Position Compensation: Individuals are given full room and board, travel reimbursement of $150, and hourly pay plus overtime. 

 

Other Position Logistics: All applicants will complete a background check. Housing is provided in a shared room in a rustic cabin on the property. Pets are not permitted. Fenton Ranch is in a remote part of the Jemez Mountains, a car is very helpful. There is a desktop computer, limited WiFi, and a home phone for calls.  The staff is small and is expected to work and live cooperatively.  

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum high school diploma, preferred bachelor’s degree

  • Excellent teamwork, leadership, and cooperation skills 

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, including public speaking

  • Ability to multi-task and coordinate several major activities simultaneously

  • Experience with teaching or leading elementary aged children

  • Experience or an interest in outdoor recreation activities: hiking, biking, camping, canoeing

  • Appreciation for the natural world and an interest in teaching environmental education 

  • Comfortable working outdoors, including warm and cold weather, rain and sun 

  • Applicants should be reliable, mature, enthusiastic, creative, and independent  

  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license
