Overview
The American Youth Foundation-Merrowvista is a nonprofit outdoor and experiential education center specializing in youth development and character building for young people ages 8-18. We are a co-ed organization that runs onsite residential programming and wilderness adventure trips, all with the focus of helping young people discover and develop the best in who they are. The Logistics Specialist (Driver) will support the camp programs with town runs, doctor or hospital visits, airport runs, and unforeseen transportation needs. They will provide safe transportation to and from out-camping trip drop-off and pick-up points, instructing campers in care and use of trip equipment, Leave No Trace ethics, and other out-camping relating skill areas.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Complete and pass the Merrowvista driver test and driving training.
  • Drive participants to and from out-camping trips, following Merrowvista’s transportation and safety guidelines as detailed in staff training.
  • Support the camp programs by working with small groups to instruct them in out-camping skills (primarily ages 8-13), Leave No Trace activities (primarily ages 13 – 15) and facilitating evening activities.
  • Support the adventure trips programs on a rotating basis while they are in camp, leading down-time activities and games, leading preparatory backpacking and canoeing trips.
  • Work with the bicycle mechanic and out-camping food/equipment specialists as needed.
  • Support the in-camp program by facilitating small-group activities, focusing on out-camping related skill areas, teach daily activities to campers, and participate in evening activities.
  • Upon return of driving trips, clean and/or supervise campers in clean up of the van as necessary including emptying trash from van, sweeping out dirt, etc.,
  • Set a high standard of personal neatness, promptness, manners, language, attitude and participation.
  • Adapt to unforeseen circumstances in the event that program activities need be altered.
  • Set personal and professional goals for the summer and work towards achieving those goals.

Essential Functions:

  • Applicants must have strong emotional health. They will be required to exhibit good judgment, effective decision making, maintain calm, and be able to effectively problem solve in changing and at times stressful conditions to safely transport participants.
  • Applicants must be in good physical health, able to lift up to 50 lbs. and load trailers with canoes, bikes and backpacks.
  • Ability to operate a 15 passenger van pulling a trailer, loaded with up to 12 campers and 2 staff.
  • Ability to maintain focus during extended periods of driving.
  • Ability to respond to and direct campers and/or staff in an emergency.
  • Ability to maintain focus while assessing risks and supervising children.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment for campers.
  • Able to effectively manage emotions to remain focused on what is best for campers in a variety of situations.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • Three years of driving experience.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Driving Record Free of Violations – All drivers of AYF vehicles will have a driving record check completed by Acxiom, a professional background check company.
