Job Description

Located in the beautiful Mohican region of central Ohio, Nuhop began in 1974 as a summer camp for children with learning disabilities. For the last 45 years Nuhop has grown and evolved to become one of Ohio’s premier experiential education facilities. Our summer camp still provides hundreds of youth each year with a safe space to experience social and emotional growth. We offer team and organizational development services that give groups of all types and sizes, from middle school-aged future leaders to international management teams, the tools they need to meet the challenges of the day and to succeed as both a team and as a collection of individual members. Our Outdoor Education program began soon after that first summer of 1974 and today serves thousands of elementary and middle school students from across Ohio and the Great Lakes region. Nuhop’s background and educational philosophy produces a uniquely balanced approach, using different ideas from experiential, outdoor, adventure and environmental education theories. Our focus with the OE program is to facilitate a deeper connection within each individual, among peers, within their community and as a part of the natural world. 

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Pre-season inservice and training and additional trainings throughout the season

  • Teach environmental and experiential classes (such as geology, teambuilding, survival, weather, canoeing, night hike)

  • Lead challenge course and high ropes course activities for various groups

  • 2-3 evening and/or overnight responsibilities each week. 

  • Facilitate occasional team building workshops with school, college, and corporate groups

  • Occasional “work days” may include light maintenance, curriculum development, etc.

Highly Qualified candidates will:

  • Have experience working with children in a traditional or non-traditional educational setting.

  • Possess an interest and passion for working out-of-doors.

  • Have the ability to lead and supervise children with professionalism and respect.

  • Pass a BCI/FBI background check.

  • Be able to stand for hours at a time and walk several miles a day.

  • Be self-motivated & flexible; thrive in a team setting; be kind, honest and authentic role-models; instruct with compassion and maintain an inclusive mindset; challenge themselves to learn and grow; buy-in to the Nuhop mission. 

Preferred candidates will:

  • Possess current First Aid/CPR Certified.

  • Have earned a 2- or 4-year degree in education, special education, outdoor education, environmental sciences, or related field.

  • Possess current ACCT or other professional certifications.

  • Have experience driving 15-passenger vans and qualify for our driver insurance.

  • For applicants interested in High Ropes Course: physical ability to climb and spend extended periods of time at 40+ feet.

Meals and on-site housing available to most candidates.

Availability:  Instructor positions are available seasonally Aug-Dec and Mar-May
