Portland Wilderness Skills Youth Camp Instructor – Summer Programs

Company: CoyleOutside

Job Description

Lead Instructors wanted for wilderness skills youth camp positions in Portland. Many of our Portland-based camps happen in the beautiful Mary S Young State Park. Each camp is 1 week in length and there are opportunities to work specific weeks only, or for the entire summer. There are also traveling positions available in Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. For these, you will be camping in new places as you change work locations. Additionally, we are looking for lead instructors interested in year-round work in the Portland area.  Please note in your cover letter if you are interested in the travel and/or year-round Portland positions.

Pay Scale: $18-$22/hr DOE

Dates: Staff training June 14-18 in Corvallis, OR and camps run from June 21 – Aug 27, 2021. There may be opportunities to train prior as well.

Hours: 9:00am – 4:00pm (approximately) Monday – Friday.

Requirements: First Aid/CPR Certification – If you are not already certified, there will be a training offered during our June 14-18 staff training in Corvallis.

It is standard for two instructors to work with up to 14 youth participants, teaching skills such as fire, knife work, shelter building, foraging, knots, tracking, navigation, archery, fishing, etc. We partner with the local Parks and Recreation department, hosting camps in public city parks. Our programs are age appropriate for youth between 6 – 17 years old.

The best instructor candidate is conscientious and creative. They have experience teaching and working with children and their families. They are able to work without supervision and can confidently deliver a quality curriculum, manage groups and behaviors, and communicate effectively and promptly as needed.

Instructor positions are varying in nature and no one instructor needs to have expertise in all of our core content areas. This job provides training, professional creativity and autonomy, outdoor work, and the opportunity to make a difference with youth. Traveling instructors are flexible, able to improvise, and are excited to travel and camp week to week.
