Job Description

Summary

The kitchen positions at the Homeplace basecamp offer opportunities for culinary adventures paired with summer at the lake. Staff are responsible for daily food-related planning and preparation, supply management, and kitchen cleanliness. The kitchen is the heart of the basecamp and strives to support a positive and collaborative environment for this Outward Bound site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Food Preparation

  • Provide homemade, creative, practical, nutritious lunches and dinners
  • Accommodate food allergies and special needs reasonably and economically
  • Plan and execute meals for special events and student course banquets

Management

  • Oversee equipment functionality and request repair as needed
  • Oversee potentially unskilled support staff
  • Regularly order kitchen food and supplies and oversee deliveries
  • Submit all financial documents to ensure prompt payment of vendors

Cleanliness and Sanitation

  • Supervise and enforce dining-related chore functions
  • Clean kitchen as per a weekly cleaning schedule
  • Restock cleaning supplies and related
  • Perform with high standards of personal hygiene and health code compliance

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Act as backup resource for basecamp and field needs
  • Other duties as delegated by management personnel

 

 

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting of a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Standing for the majority of shifts
  • Tolerance of long days in a hot kitchen

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of cooking for large groups, food safety, nutrition, alternative diets, and food allergies
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Strong personal motivation, initiative, efficiency and commitment
  • Flexibility and ability to follow directions in an often fast-paced environment

Education and Work Experience

  • 1 – 2 years of cooking experience at minimum
  • Commercial or institutional cooking for large groups experience preferred
  • ServSafe or equivalent food-handling and sanitation certification preferred

Compensation & Benefits

  • The kitchen positions are seasonal, from approximately late April to late August, with possibility to extend into September
  • Pay is hourly. Actual rates are determined by experience and aptitude
  • Lodging, general utilities and all meals are provided at no cost during the working season
  • Positions are approximately 40 hours per week. Additional hours are possible in relation to basecamp needs and during peak times. Effort is made to provide sequential days off when the basecamp schedule allows
  • Supplemental support work on an as-needed basis may be available. Employee must have a clean driving record and pass a background check
  • Arrangements may be made by VOBS administration to provide maximum flexibility and sustainability within this position
