Buckhorn Wilderness Program

Updated: April 2, 2002

Buckhorn Wilderness Program is a respect based, early intervention, program for probated youth. We offer a 7 month program that includes a 2 month therapeutic wilderness component and 5 months of intensive aftercare services. Initially, students spend 5 weeks at our basecamp in Buckhorn, KY, learning wilderness/outdoor hard skills and focusing on issues such as trust, relationships, communication, anger management, self-esteem, teambuilding, leadership and personal responsibility. Elements include an Alpine Tower, hiking, backpacking, swimming, canoeing, rappeling, community service, ceremony and solos to name a few. The next phase of our program is a 21 day backpacking expedition, where the test of their work is challenged and transference of learning to home situations is explored. The final phase is the 5 month aftercare component. Designed to support the transition home and continue the personal growth goals and objectives that were established during the wilderness phases. We are driven by the mission to “Seek out suffering Children and Families and Improve their Lives”. Our parent agency has been answering this call since 1902.
