The College Settlement of Philadelphia

Updated: January 7, 2005

The College Settlement of Philadelphia is a non-profit organization that operates a spring and fall outdoor school, summer resident and day camp programs.
OUTDOOR SCHOOL –
We have been offering residential environmental education programs since 1973 and are constantly adding new aspects to our popular 3 day residential experience. Elementary and middle school students work with CS Outdoor School staff and their own classroom teachers participate in a wide variety of hands on lessons, ropes course and group challenge activities while focusing on the beautiful natural habitats on our campus. We blend together academic and living skills to enhance student cohesiveness and appreciation for the nautural environment. We work with schools and organizations to develop personalized programs to meet their specific goals.

SUMMER – The College Settlement Camp ,which started in 1922, offers overnight camping to economically needy children from the five county Philadelphia area. Children come for a two week session of residential camp. Most of our campers come on scholarship and are recruited through school counselors, social workers, shelters and community workers within their neighborhoods in the city.
The extensive summer programs focus on building positive environmental ethics. We offer traditional residential, day and adventure based programs, both on and off-site activities, an outpost in the Pocono Mountains and a Teen Adventure Program for older children.

The beautiful facility includes a 20 acre organic farm, low and high ropes courses, a 4 acre pond, wetlands and several small streams, fields, woodlands and a nature center complete with donkeys, goats and chickens.

Our goals:
* develop and nurture a positive environmental ethic through fun activities .
*family/community atmosphere in which children and adults enjoy working and playing together.
*the opportunity to share, play, learn and work to children of all backgrounds, religious affiliations, cultures and nationalities.
*provide a healthy and practical lifestyle through proper nutrition and practice of daily routine.
