InnerRoads Wilderness Program

InnerRoads Wilderness Program

Updated: January 20, 2016

Since 2001 InnerRoads has been offering innovative therapeutic care to at-risk teens ages 13-17.  Our priority is to serve low income families whose economic constraints deny them access to services.   It is important to us that the benefits of wilderness therapy are available to all families, regardless of income.  We make this possible by providing a sliding scale fee for programing.  Working primarily with local youth from Montana and Idaho, 95% of our client receive some form of reduced rate, many paying little to nothing.  We believe that everyone we work with has the innate ability and desire, however well it may be masked, to change and grow when given an environment that is safe, supportive, and challenging. We know that parents play an essential role in their child’s healing, so we provide training and one on one sessions with families to help facilitate family growth.  During our program youth spend 6 weeks backpacking in a true wilderness setting as they work to build appropriate relationships, self resilience, and coping skills that will help them on their path to becoming healthy adults. Participants are carefully selected from the referrals of parents, counselors, probation officers, and school officials.  Many of our students are experiencing depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem and can greatly benefit from time in the wilderness. Our staff utilize relationship-based approaches to therapy rather than punitive or coercive techniques and work closely with our program therapist to create and alter treatment plans as need.  Above all we strive to help youth return to a more stable and sustainable home situation after our program.
