The United State Navy has created the Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC) to meet the outdoor recreation needs of military members and their families. The OAC is comprised of three main areas including trips, rental, and retail programs. The trip program takes participants kayaking, surfing, mt. biking, scuba diving, and indoor rock climbing in the Virginia Beach area. Out destination trips include white water rafting in West Virginia, and skiing and caving in western Virginia. In addition to the trips, the OAC also provides instruction in many areas of outdoor adventure including kayak skills and surfing. Last but not least is the ever popular challenge course program that uses trained facilitators to assist regional, national, and international divisions of the Navy in the development of sound team oriented environments. In this program, skills such as communication, leadership, trust, and teamwork are developed/strengthened. The second aspect of the OAC is the retail program. The OAC’s retail program is small and intimate with the mission of providing high quality outdoor equipment to the members of the military and their families. The rental program provides all the necessary outdoor equipment one needs to enjoy the Virginia Beach area including surfboards, sea kayaks, white water kayaks, mt. bikes, and backpacking gear. The final piece of the OAC pie is the hugely successful youth program. This program provides outdoor adventure opportunities for the military dependant teen community of the Virginia Beach region. Adventures of the youth program include white water rafting, rock climbing, caving, surfing, and sea kayaking.
