Outdoor Recreation at Sam Houston State University is a multifaceted program consisting of four components: outdoor trips and workshops, The Base Camp, the Climbing Center, and the university recreation and retreat center – Bearkat Camp. Outdoor trips can include rock climbing, canoeing, mountain biking, camping, hiking, kayaking, deep sea fishing, mountaineering, canyoneering, rafting, and snow sports. The Base Camp provides equipment rentals ranging from mountain bikes to kayaks, canoes, stoves, lanterns, tents, and many additional outdoor related items. The Climbing Center features a 35 foot climbing wall and and separate 13 foot bouldering island. Finally, Bearkat Camp is a 345-acre recreation and retreat facility that when completed will feature cabins, dining facilities, sports fields, boating, ropes courses, biking and hiking trails, research facilities, and a retreat and meeting center. SHSU Outdoors also provides research support for various academic departments here at the university and at field sites across the world.
