Wildwoods Foundation, The

Updated: June 4, 2002

The Wildwoods Foundation, a project of Community Partners ©, is a non-profit organization serving the communities of greater Los Angeles. Our motto is “Building Community by Exploring Nature.” Our mission is “To provide outdoor programming for young people to help them acquire a sense of stewardship for the natural environment, responsibility for their role in the community and the tools to achieve emotional well-being.” The overall goal of the Wildwoods Foundation is to foster a young, urban population that is aware of, and concerned about their surrounding environment – both the natural world and their urban community – and mindful of their impact upon that environment. To that end, our flagship program is “Full Circle,” an outdoor-based character development and community-building program for elementary school classes. Meeting weekly over a two-month period, Full Circle combines field trips to local parks with classroom and neighborhood activities that explore the connections and parallels between nature, human ecology and personal behavior. Using the relationships in nature as a model of healthy community interaction, students form groups that work together through a series of teambuilding and discovery activities, allowing them to explore these principles of interconnection on a social level. Other programs, based on the underlying philosophy that is the foundation of Full Circle, are also being developed.
