YMCA Camp Widjiwagan is located on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and provides wilderness adventure programs in the summer and residential environmental education during the school year. Founded in 1927, Widjiwagan’s mission is to develop in young people, respect for self, community and environment.
Widjiwagan’s environmental education program runs during the fall/winter/spring months of the year. With the natural world as a classroom, learning comes alive for the school groups that come to Widji. Working with groups of 7-10 students at a time, Widji instructors hike, snowshoe, ski or canoe with their students as they explore the natural world. Our curriculum is designed to provide an understanding of ecological concepts, knowledge of cultural and natural history of the region, problem solving, and teambuilding skills. Because of the small community focus of our program, we are able to tailor the curriculum to meet each school’s specific goals and objectives.
Widjiwagan’s summer wilderness tripping program has been in operation since 1929. Trail counselors lead small groups of adolescents on single gender canoe or backpack trips throughout wilderness areas of North America.
Hiring for the fall, winter and spring environmental education program is currently ongoing and operates on a rolling basis. Fall season hiring closes in mid-August. Hiring for the summer wilderness adventure program begins on January 1, 2009.
