The Dirigo Institue for Natural Learning leads environmental education immersion weeks in twenty-nine foot canoes on Maine Lakes and Coastal waters. You paddle and practice minimum impact travel while developing curriculum in “Place Based Education” that is aligned with the Learning Results. Educators work independently therefore the programs cut across all grade levels. Guides and informal educators, Jo Eaton and Gudrun Keszocze, have been leading outdoor programs for over ten years.

Programs are conducted in twenty-nine foot “North” canoes. The fourteen person (seven when camping) canoes facilitate the group development process, equalize skill development allowing students, educators, families, corporate groups and individuals to experience canoeing in a relatively stress free atmosphere. Our Maine Water Studies programs are conducted on rivers, lakes and inshore coastal areas. The programs incorporate outdoor education, environmental and experiential education with local resources to involve educators in connecting students with their environment and community. Programs include: teacher workshops for recertification, one or multi-day programs for school groups, custom camping programs.
